Too late to send off GBS test at 37+2 weeks?

I didn't realise until recently that GBS was something I "should" worry about and I didn't receive my test pack until today. The test should be taken between 35 and 37 weeks. I can't work out if they mean up to 37 weeks or including 37 weeks, but the point is that it wouldn't be nice to go into labour and then find out that I am GBS positive and should have had antibiotics. I am meant to get my results in a text within 3 working days of the receipt of my swabs, but I'm not sure how long it will actually take before they receive my swabs as they are to be sent in the postage-paid envelope provided.

What would you do in my situation? Am I unlikely enough to have gone into labour by let's say a week from now for it to be worth sending off the swabs today? And now I don't mean worth it in a financial sense, but considering the stress of finding out too late I should have had antibiotics.

Has anyone here used www.groupbstreptest.co.uk? How long did it take from sending off the swabs to receiving the results? Do you have to talk to your midwife first as the request form asks for your midwife/consultant details? I am very unlikely to manage to get hold of mine today and obviously leaving it even longer is a bad idea. If you were GBS positive, were you taken seriously by the maternity staff? Can you be denied antibiotics if you are GBS positive, but have no other risk factors?

Sometimes I really wish I would have been pregnant before the internet existed so I could have been blissfully unaware of everything bad that can happen in rare cases. Sad

Really hoping for quick response to this as I only have a few hours to decide and send off the swabs, so thanks in advance for any replies!

Can't advise on timings for this as haven't used it. I already know I'm GBS positive. But if it were me, I'd still send it off and hope to get the results in time.

You could always take the prepaid envelope to a Post Office and pay extra for them to send it Special Delivery (prob 5 quid) for guaranteed next day delivery.

Sorry op, didn't fully read your post. As I understand it, if your positive you'll be offered ABs in labour. You can decline I'd you want but why would you? I don't think they would deny you them if you test positive.

My notes have a big yellow sticker on the front that reads 'Group B Strep alert. Offer intravenous antibiotics'.

Thanks, didn't think of special delivery! If I do that I should have the results by the time I am 38+0 which is safe-ish, I suppose.

As I understand it, the general guidelines are to offer antibiotics to all GBS positive women in labour, but I have read in some places that if there are no other risk factors, they can choose to not give you antibiotics, but observe the baby for 24 hours after birth. If that would be the case, taking the test would be absolutely useless as I would then know I have something to worry about, but could do absolutely nothing to prevent an infection. But they should give me antibiotics if I want them and have a valid reason, right?

And is it rude of me to give out my midwife's name and address (practice address, not home address of course) without talking to her first? As I said I am extremely unlikely to get hold of her today and I really can't afford leaving it until Monday.

The hospital are unlikely to dismiss your result, if anything they take too many measures sometimes with gbs (e.g. some hospitals give baby ABs if mum didn't have them rather than just observe).

I would send it off special delivery.

You can phone your mw on Monday to explain what you did, and why it was so rushed, but you're only giving out work details so I can't see a problem.

If anything the mws thought I was being a bit overly concerned and maybe had too much money to throw away by doing a private test Hmm

The result comes v quick btw. The concern I would have is if it says you're positive, how to make sure the mw gets the result in time to put measures in place eg the sticker on your notes. But if this is your first baby then you're less likely to be early so you should be fine with sitting that out!

I did mine at 37 weeks and got the results super quick. Over the August bank holiday weekend in fact! Unfortunately, I tested positive which really threw a spanner in the works for my planned MLU water birth (managed to have one anyway, thankfully).

Try not to panic too much.
