trimethoprim in 2nd trimester

I 've been prescribed trimethoprim for a uti at 14 wks+5. When I checked with the pharmacist on Saturday she said don't take it, so I rang the surgery this morning and the doctor has confirmed she's happy its safe at my stage of pregnancy. I don't like causing a fuss, but am still feeling quite uneasy about taking it. Any advice or previous experience?

I was prescribed this during my last pregnancy for a uti it was fine, took it for 7 days and uti went and no probs with it at all.
I really wouldn't worry uti's are so common in pregnancy and this is a really standard antibiotic to be prescribed for a uti thousands and thousands of women will have taken it during pregnancy.
A course of antibiotics is much safer than an untreated uti :)

Hi, the main concern with trimethoprim is that theoretically it could affect the amount of folic acid available to the body - low folate levels are linked to neural tube defects . At your stage of pregnancy, this is no longer a concern as the neural tube is already closed and the risk of physical birth defects being caused by medicines etc has passed. It's very important to treat UTIs in pregnancy however, and it sounds like your GP has given you good advice

thanks both! I ve had a prem baby before so I guess the priority of treating the uti was more important! Im taking them like a good girl!
