Has anyone taken Cefalexin for uti?

Hi all,

Am 18 weeks and just been diagnosed with uti, after about 7 bloody urine tests, they have found some bacteria in my urine.
Has anyone had experience with the above antibiotic? Says it should be safe for baby, but I've not even taken a paracetamol this pg, let alone strong antibiotics. I guess I'm a little worried!

I had it for a UTI.
It's been proven to be safe in pregnancy. An untreated UTI can cause a lot of problems for you and baby so must be treated.

I have kidney problems and recurrent utis. I have taken daily cefalexin since I was 13 and I am now 34. I increase to a full dose as soon as I feel an infection coming on. I've had two healthy pregnancies, one 11 years ago and one 2 years ago. Taken the drug throughout as normal and no issues.

It's one of the safest ones to take. It is more dangerous to leave an uti untreated.

I also took it for a UTI fairly early in my preg and all was fine -adding to previous posts just in case additional positive stories are more reassuring Smile

Yes - took this for a UTI during PG and it's totally safe! Much much safer than leaving the UTI be.

I've been on cefalexin for a UTI. It didn't work, so now on amoxicillin. If your symptoms persist it's vital you go back and change to a different antibiotic. Not all infections will respond to cefalexin. You should notice an improvement in the next 36 - 48 hours. UTI's are horrendous. I've been suffering for about 3 weeks now Sad

I took this whilst pregnant; it was the only safe one which I am not allergic too. I also took it the whole time I was breast feeding DS (12 m) due to intractable womb infection, and was at triple dose by the end. No ill effects on DS, in uterine or when he was receiving It via my milk. He was a large, healthy baby.

Thanks all! Selly that sounds horrendous; I I have no symptoms apart from a mild burning sensation when I need the loo. It was only picked up because I went to the doctors with a 'damp' feeling down there! (tmi sorry) Had my urine sent off to the hospital and they couldn't grow a 'culture' out of it, so one doctor said no antibiotics needed, but could be thrush, even though there was a high bacteria count. The female doctor I saw yesterday (and who rang me with initial results last week) put me straight on Cefalexin after doing another Urine dip test, as she said she wouldn't like it to get out of hand. On it for 5 days and then back for another sample to send off to hospital. I'm grateful they are being thorough though Smile.

Hi there

I know this post is old but I wanted to join as I wanted to know did you all have healthy babies after taking Cefalexin?
I hate all the ingredients in the coating ammonia est

I was put on a course of Cefalexin yday as I have an asymptomatic UTI. I’m literally 37 weeks tomorrow and feel disappointed that I made it this far to get a UTI.
I have a stitch so I am high risk.
I have started taking as I know a UTI untreated is dangerous in pregnancy when not treated.

Just wanted reassurance that all was ok with your babies

Thank you so much
