old wives tales ... gender

DH were chatting about this. Old wives tales like ... community.babycenter.com/post/a28444349/51_gender_prediction_wives_tales

Of course they don't really work, what I find funny is they "clash" so much e.g. for me:
Sickness (girl)
During which I ate salted crisps (boy)
Combination skin (boy and girl)
Carrying high (boy or girl depending on old wife it seems!)
Not hairier (girl)
Leg hair didn't vanish I wish (boy)
...and so on.
I am mid 30s and conceived Xmas ... Guessing 100s of women did just this so hold little store by the Chinese table. Especially as the convert-to-lunar one told me I was actually 4 years older in Chinese years... grrrrr! Grin

What are your favourites? Just for fun!

These are very funny. Its odd for me as at the start I was visualising a girl, I saw her face and her name is stuck in my head. Now it's the same for a boy. The Chinese thing says boy for me. I agree about the sickness and sweet tooth thing both those things have got progressively worse in all of my pregnancies and I don't believe I'd be carrying the same every time. And I do hope its not true about the nose I really can't afford for mine to get bigger or wider!

I'm also mid 30's and conceived a couple of weeks after you. No bump yet so can't tell anything from how I'm carrying. My mum's second. Child was a boy if that one means anything.

I've found ones like "colour of mums hair (natural or dyed)" on some quizzes hilarious! Baby's gender could change on my mum's whim then (her friend at Bridge told her a new brand was super for dry hair... New colour!).

I've not heard that one about colour of mums hair. That's interesting. How does that work? My df and db both ginger. Dh and I both dark blonde.

I have to say I'm not worried either way but dh is desperate to find out!

squizita · 20/04/2014 11:48

I think the darker the hair, the more likely a boy?? But dye counts?

DH is desperate to know! I had to tell him to shut up about it because believe it or not I can't look up there and check! Ha!

That's madness! So 2 blonde parents definitely make a girl I think I'll be using that line on dh about looking up there to check!isn't it funny how they seem more bothered than we are! He was banging on about having a son and heir and the carrying on the family name cliché the other day then pretended he was joking. I know he wasn't. I think we'll be able to tell at the next scan but I'm not sure they tell you here. I'll laugh if they don't!

Chinese predictor - girl
Got hairier - boy
Carried for a boy
Craved chicken nuggets and apple - bit of both ;)
everyone guessed boy
horrendous sickness - girl

DD is fast asleep in my arms :)

Mrsnec mine is convinced boys are often naughty or annoyingly precocious with no middle ground (based on him, he was both: bright but a pain in the a**e as a kid), and girls are sensible (like his sister).
As a school teacher myself my response was "Hahaha hahaha. Dude. Really?"
How innocent he is!

That still describes my dh! And Moomin, judging by your experience we're right it could go either way if you go by old wives tales! Mind you am I right in thinking scans aren't always accurate either don't some people pay for 4d scans and the bits cant be seen or the sonographer gets it wrong? So even if I am told I still don't think I'm going to believe them! Not painting the spare room blue for now its staying magnolia!

Lol, I was told at my midwife appointment my baby had a boy's heartbeat, turned out she is a girl at the 20 week scan. I'm carrying low aswell, again supposed to be a boy. She could still come out a he, but I doubt it as had a strong feeling it was a she right from the 12 week scan, I'd be utterly shocked if she was a he when the time comes! xx

First pregnancy - no sickness, giant bump, all hair disappeared, skin was vile - DD

Second pregnancy - faint nausea, gianter bump, all hair disappeared, skin was lovely - DS

Third pregnancy- sick as a dog, no bump, giant bloat, hairy like a yeti, skin is vile - sonographer says girl.

The only thing that is consistent is date of conception - girl pregnancies were conceived a couple of days before ovulation, DS was on ovulation day. I chart so know exactly when I conceive.

Chinese gender predictor said girl

Mil (with her magic crystal!) said boy

Everyone else in the world said boy, before I even had a bump

Bump carried all out in front, high and round.
No weight put on elsewhere
Very hairy tummy!
Ok skin
Mild nausea at the start, stopping immediately at 11 weeks

Sonographer says boy - I hope he's right because I've painted the nursery blue! Four weeks until we find out for sure!

Don't normally believe old wives tales but I tick most of the boy boxes so maybe there is something to them!

Update... scan says GIRL. A lot of people 'felt' I might be having one (but could just say that either way??) when I told them. :)

I am carrying a boy..

  • Much less hairy (havent had to shave my legs in months, woohooo!!!)
  • No sickness WHATSOEVER (more's the pity, have ballooned)
  • Roundy bump, like a basketball, very contained, and low.. v low
  • Cravings? everything. whatever i can get into my gob. fruit, carbs, salty, sweet, you name it. Just FOOD!!
  • Lots of kicking. Very active child. apparently boys are bigger kickers?

Chica my sonographer mentioned girls being more lively as they react to sugar more! I had some chocolate beforehand to wake baby up and it went nuts in there... was funny to watch!

I find out at 9am tomorrow what we're having, can not wait, i will have private scans numbers on phone just incase they have their legs crossed, can't bare not knowing any longer.

Chinese - Girl
Heartrate at 16wks - 148 - Girl
Sickness - few bits of nausea early, never sick, stopped at 7wks - Boy
Bump - mix between watermelon and basketball and low - Boy
Body Hair - stomach got a little more blonde (thank god) hair but leg hair nearly stopped - Girl
Skin - the same, but dry on knuckles which i normally only get in winter, - Boy
Cravings - off milk, wanting fruit early, then couldn't get enough milk, now is pretty much as i normally am, though maybe with a little less chocolate wanting. - Girl early on but now either

I think the only one i think could be true about is the hair thing, cause surely if your carring a boy he puts testosterone in your system which would make hair grow??

Guess i'll find out soon enough, will post results as i've read so many forums on this subject and barely get to hear the outcome.

I thought I was having a boy early on and I am! Chinese predictor says boy, I craved salty food (normally sweet toothed), mild nausea that passed at 12 wks, bump is all out front and I've developed hairs on my belly.

Report
squizita · 25/04/2014 11:03

Casey apparently the hair thing can be YOU producing testosterone (some women have increased hair during parts of their cycle for example). I'm pretty hairy at the moment - especially the bump, weirdly. (No way am I saving my bump lol).

SHAVING.

But also after DD is out, I will try my utmost not to hang on to the bump. We will see though: sleepless nights + permission to eat brie/sushi/wine = might end up bumpy for a good while after. Grin

I had horrible indigestion and the cleaner in my workplace was entirely sure I was having a boy, and he would be very hairy (can't figure out how indigestion would be affected by a hairy baby?).

Dd1 wasn't hairy at all!

The Chinese thing has been right for me both times, and was right for my sister in law.

I should have been a boy though!

Baby had their legs firmly together, they kept going back to see if they'd moved which was nice as it was nhs scan it isn't to tell you the gender. Least everything ok with little one, but booked a private one for later today, i've had such a bad nights sleep last few nights looking forward to finding out, so glad i could get in somewhere at 8pm so i don't have another bad nights sleep, fingers crossed i will be sleeping soundly later.

Not an old wives tale, but the doctor told my friend she was having a girl as they are more likely to get their feet under the rib cage and kick. She had this with her first who was a girl, but not with her second (a boy) who was a big lad. I've only had one but was kicked on the inside of my ribs - it was a girl.

According to medics heart rate is the only accurate one. But I had a strong gut feeling and get it with other people too.

Report
squizita · 25/04/2014 15:25

Helly Heart rate - my sonographer said it only increases during birth for girls! So you find out early - but only an hour or two! Grin Before 20 weeks, it's not possible to tell as the overlap is so great.
