Simply because I throw them up within 5 minutes. I've tried taking them with food, without, dry, with tons of water..nothing. I throw it up like it's about to poison my system.

My MW and DM said "well many heakthu children have been born without them so don't worry about it" "I didn't take any with you, I don't even remember the MW asking me to"

I just worry for my poor baby.

Has anyone not taken any, by choice or through no fault of their own too?

Are you able to eat well or are you just sick after everything?
There are plenty of people who don't - people who don't realise they're pregnant until later; our mothers and their mothers etc...

If you can make sure that your diet contains all of the things that your baby needs, then great. To be honest, I've mainly been taking vitamins because they make ME less tired; the baby seems to take what it needs first, and I feel like I get the leftovers.

I did with the big pregnacare vitamins but found a small pot of folic acid tablets and they were tiny - like the size of contraceptive pills...much easier. Have you tried those?

Are you keeping down other food?

Please don't worry. Hundreds of women (thousands?) each year don't discover they are pregnant until towards the end of the first trimester and haven't taken anything or done anything.

I took folic acid, but I never take any vitamin supplements, ever. I think they are a bit of a waste of money.

I would highly recommend you take folic acid even if you don't want to take other vitamins. Anecdotally folic acid may prevent tongue tie and tongue tie can be the cause of many many problems once baby is born. It's best to be on the safe side. All the best Smile

I started taking them, but have up after a few weeks because they made me feel sick, and I didn't have any morning sickness!
And I have a lovely 9 week old daughter :)
I'm not saying that they don't do any good and you shouldn't bother taking them but if they make you feel ill then you shouldn't feel guilty about not taking them, especially when being pregnant puts us through enough

Thank you for all your replies.

I can keep most food down, my MS has lessened. I'm 17 weeks and I was beginning to wonder if it's too late to start the vitamins again. I've tried the small folic acid pills too.. threw that up.

I'll just pray baby is healthy and happy when he/she is born.

I had no idea about the tongue tie thing. I thought folic acid was for the spine?

If you have been keeping other foods down, many cereals are fortified with folic acid anyway.

Please try not to worry. It's about reducing risk at a population level, not something you need to beat yourself up about.

Folic acid is mainly for spina bifida I think. Never heard of the tongue tie thing and I took pre natal vitamins and folic acid religiously and my son still has a severe tongue tie.

Folic acid only needs to be taken until 12 weeks though, it's not necessary after the

But as Amanda pointed out, many foods are fortified with folic acid, bread and cereal being the main ones so it's unlikely many people are lacking.

I was told to stop taking them at 12 wks with ds.

I chose not to take them (any of them), think it's a load of tosh. No harm in taking them, but if you have a balanced diet and are keeping your food down, there's no appreciable benefit either.

I am always reminded of Sheldon from Big Bang Theory watching Penny buy vitamins and saying "what you are buying there is the ingredients for really expensive urine" Grin

My Dr is obsessive about frolic acid. Last time I went I mentioned I might be thinking of ttc in six months (it was in relation to contraception, pil etc) or so & he told me to take frolic acid tablets now. I haven't though. I was abit Confused really!

I guess its important but probably odds are very much in your favour of everything being fine IYSWIM?

WantedGSOH · 03/10/2013 18:23

I didn't take any with dd as I found out too late and I've stopped taking them now too 10+1 because I constantly have the runs and was wondering if its due to that x

My MW said folic acid may cause tongue ties. It is one reason (just a theory at the mo) tongue ties' have increased. I believe there is currently a study comparing folic acid and folate to see if tongue tie incidence is reduced.

I didn't take any, I had hg and so wasn't able to swallow anything without retching and throwing up so it would have been pointless anyway. My dd is 16 weeks now and completly fine

I was the same as you OP. I did take them for a few months whilst ttc but just couldn't keep them down once pregnant.

I took frolic acid/ pregnancy vitamins until about 20 weeks and I've not taking any since. I think if you are eating healthy and varied you should be fine. Think the vitamins are a bit of a con really...mHmm

DS is hale and hearty and almost 5, and I was in your situation with him.

He did have a horrendous tongue tie, but so did his dad and they are strongly linked to genetics. And as half of pregnancies aren't planned, an awful lot of women can't have taken prenatals. Most babies didn't have SB in our generation and our mothers had no idea you should take folic acid, either.
