Just wondering if anyone knows anything about new legislation regarding SMP. I've just started mat leave and one of my colleagues said that you are now able to apply for an extension of SMP if you decide not to return to work after 9 months ( i am a teacher and hope to take the full 52 weeks) i.e you can claim SMP for final 3 months of mat leave if you decide to take the full term .

Thanks

It was in the pipeline but was postponed indefinitely in 2009.

from online:

April ? Extension of Statutory Maternity Pay - postponed indefinitely

In 2009 the government announced it would not go ahead with the planned extension of statutory maternity pay from 39 to 52 weeks. It had been planned to implement this policy by April 2010 but this has been postponed indefinitely.
