This is my first message so here goes. I'm 18 weeks pregnant with a long waited for baby ( was about to start IVF when I found out I was 8 wks pregnant) but I woke this morning with a stich like pain low down in my right side. The pain only lasted a few minutes but its been niggling evry few hours all day and sometimes it's on the left as well. Is really just like stitch and not agony or anything but is this normal? I worry about evry ache and twinge as it's taken a long time to get this far.

I had this with all of my pregnancies. The cramps were very similar to period pains and similar to those you're describing.

Hi Ballymena,

I had a similar pain a few weeks ago when I was about your stage too. Was very painful, and had a small 'loss' - the first time that had happened. Spent two days feeling paranoid and finally worked up the courage to phone the midwife who came out with the doppler and reassured me baby was fine. Have since had 20 wk scan - also fine- and no further problems although do get gripey from time to time. Have been told it is because I am older this pregnancy and therefore body is "more creaky" in GP's words! If you are worried, get in touch with midwife. I felt bad about pestering her, but was def worth it for peace of mind x

had similar pain when I was slightly later into pregnancy with my DS. Went into a total panic and called the doctor. He was very patronising and said that it was perfectly normal - just muscles expanding etc etc. his exact words "oh don't be so worried now, take a couple of paracetamol, and if it goes away then you know I was right. if it doesn't go away then get yourself up to the hospital." His tone was very condescending but he was right and the pain passed. I've made a conscious effort never to visit that particular doctor again - besides which I thought he spoke just like Harold Shipman, lol.
