Pregnancy

Have become pregnant whilst using IUD which is still in place

Just wondering if anyone else has had the above experience
and what the outcome was. I found out I was pregnant two
days ago. Did home test and then went to Dr's where it was
confirmed. I am about 7 weeks pregnant and feel crap. I
dont seem to be able to get much advice on whether to have
the IUD taken out or whether it should be left in and what
are the statics for miscarriage if it remains or is taken
out and if there are any other risks. I would be glad to
hear from anyone else this has happened to. My IUD is
still in place and has not moved. I would also like to
know if anyone has managed to have a full term pregnancy
in this situation. I was not planning to get pregnant but
I would never have an aborition. I have one child who is
14 so you can imagine this has come as a bit of shock. I
cant really start enjoying being pregnant though as I dont
know whats going to happen and need some more advice. My
Doctor was rather taken aback at the situation and didnt
really know what advice to offer.

Would appreciate any advice as I am really worried.

Sharon

Jacketspud - firstly congratulations. And at your GP for being so useless. I have no experience of this but the NHS direct site says...

'There is a slightly higher risk of ectopic pregnancy occurring if a woman becomes pregnant while using an IUD. You should have your IUD removed as soon as possible if you are continuing with the pregnancy.', so it sounds as if it should be removed.

If I were you I'd go back to your GP pronto, and insist they come up with an informed plan of action (hopefully they will have done a bit of reseach in the meantime anyway, and should be more able to advise).

Good luck, and I hope everything goes well, and you can relax and enjoy the pregnancy.

hi have never been through this but from looking at other peoples advice i would go to the doctors and get an early scan to make sure baby is in the womb.

I would go and have a scan too. And see another Dr. Maybe speak to a midwife?

If you are at risk of an ectopic pregnancy then you need to have a scan done at 6 weeks at an early pregnancy unit. I knwo thsi for definite because i was at risk of one because i have a kink in one fallopian tubes so i had an early scan in all 3 pregnancies.

The bad news is that this is an internal scan with a vaginal probe - doesnt hurt, just a bit gross! The good news is that they can usually see teh baby's heart beating, whihc is wonderful!

D you have any idea how many weeks you are?

Sorry t mention it, but if I were you I woudl read up on the signs of an ectopic pregnancy. If you have one its pretty serious, i think if you get any severve pain you need to get to hospital asap.

Sorry i dont knwo about the IUD. Suspect that you shouold be seen at an early pregnancy unit asap. Like on Monday!

sorry for bad typing, baby on lap

A family friend got pregnant whilst she had a coil in place, she begged the doctor to remove the coil whilst it was early days. She said she'd be better able to cope if she lost the baby so early on than later. Doctors refused.

She had the worst pregnancy, the coil ruptured the water, she was in hospital for about three months at the end (I think) and the baby was born by c-section really early, as baby was in the womb but there was no water, it all eventually leaked out.......

Mum and baby are fine now, but friend is furious that nobody listened to her when she requested the coil be removed.

I'm no expert but I do agree that you need to have an early scan to make sure everything is okay. I do have a friend who is a midwife and I recall her telling me that she has delivered many babies that were conceived whilst the mother had a coil. She said she delivered one which was holding the coil in its hand!!!

I hope it all gets sorted out for you. Good luck xx

when i worked in the women's clinic, we saw a few who'd conceived on the coil. they usually tried to remove it, but in one famous instance, they could not find the b*gger. it was later found - in the baby's placenta after normal vaginal delivery !

Many thanks for all your posts. I am going to make sure I get a scan and find out what is going on. Good to know that people have still had babies in this situation.

Well I went back to the Dr's and they sent me to the hospital for a scan yesterday. There is definitely a baby, although no heartbeat as too early to see. It's in the right place in the womb which is good so not ectopic. The IUD was removed successfully and so far I feel fine. The chance of miscarriage is 40% so not getting my hopes up too much yet but everything okay so far.

I have to go back for another scan in two weeks so we'll see what happens.
