Stomach pain on eating

Am just over six months and have started having excruciating stomach pains when I eat.

I have had heartburn for a while in this pregancy, but this is quite different - sharp pains below my ribs when the food or drink hits my stomach.

I did see a doctor this morning but he was a bit clueless. He suggested Rennies/Gaviscon on the basis that it was probably heartburn related, although he couldn't tell me for sure whether they were safe in pregnancy...

Has anyone else had this or have any advice?

Zeph! Was just beaking through unanswered threads when I saw this - had no idea you were pregnant! Anyway, can offer no advice, I'm afraid - ate Rennies a lot when pg with ds, and all well - it's just a neutralisation reaction, I think, but it doesn't sound like heartburn. Count this as a bump and congratulations anyway.

Thanks Habbibu for both the congratulations and the bump.

Pain has been getting worse, although still intermittent - seems to be mostly 5-10 seconds after swallowing, starting under my ribs on the right hand side and radiating across. Eating is agony. I was worried about it yesterday so phoned the midwives for reassurance, and they asked me to come into the hospital. What with NHS resources being so overstretched I didn't get home again until 2.30 in the morning, as although they had established that the baby was fine, they wouldn't let me out until I had seen the doctor who was, naturally, extremely busy dealing with complicated deliveries.

Anyway, she thought it might be a problem with my gall bladder, but said that unless I was vomiting or had a fever that wouldn't come down I should just take paracetamol. Hopefully it will pass...

Ooh - poor you. I guess they're disinclined to investigate further while you're still pregnant. Paracetamol sounds a weak remedy, though!

gaviscon is fine when pg - had to take it with dd1. could it be baby kicking you? xx

Thanks both. Definitely some kind of digestive thing not kicks (although I'm certainly getting plenty of those).

Gastroenterologist family friend has said should have an ultrasound to find out what's going on, but actually it's been quite a bit milder this afternoon/evening so am hoping whatever it is is just going to go away soon.
