Is there anyone else out there who has experienced their son's refusal to sit down on the potty or toilet? I am quite keen to somehow overcome this with my LO as he is pooing in his pants...I know this is common especially at the start.
He will wee stood up into the potty. This is fabulous I suppose, but he won't do the same stood on a little step at the toilet.
It's a lot to take in for him all at once I suppose but then I don't want this developing into a problem for him if it's not nipped in the bud.
Any ideas? Maybe some ideas on good toilet seats for toddlers as well as I think the ones I have are quite rubbish.
I have been reading the threads on pooing on pants ....maybe half the battle will be the transition to sit on the toilet.
If anyone has any suggestions, greatly appreciated.

Sounds horrible but what happens if he is not wearing pants. With the better weather you may be able to let him run around without pants on for at least part of the day. He may feel more inclined to poo in the toilet or potty if no pants are on.

Will he sit on the potty with a nappy on? Maybe start that way and just get him to sit on it for a minute or two whilst watching tv or reading a book. You can then progress to undoing his nappy so that it is in the potty beneath him but he's not actually wearing it iyswim. As a final step take the nappy away and hope the gradual adjustment does the trick! I haven't tried that method myself but it worked for a friend.

I don't know what would happen without nappy. Well, rather he has not done a poo when his pants or nappy are not on.
If I could get him to sit on potty in first place then I can see there could be a chance this would eventually happen. Is it unusual for a boy to want to wee stood up straight away? Copying Dad I guess.
My son rarely sits for anything tho except Chuggington. Maybe I could try and tie those 2 things together. Sitting down to try and poo while we put Chuggington DVD on!
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I am maybe fretting too much as it is still early (ish) days.

Not so unusual re: standing up. My nephew did it straight away at 2 years ; my son potty trained then started to stand up soon after.

Have you tried any the kids books on potty training; has your son seen other boys or you/your DH on the potty to demonstrate - I know sounds bizarre but I think kids are naturally a bit worried and feel vunerable about sitting on potties/toilets .

Another thing have you considered rewards for almost sitting ont he potty e.g. chocolate coin( or whatever you like ) for sitting on potty with trousers and pants on ; then only with pants ;then with pants off ; then for doing wee or poo?

Throw some cereal in the toilet and have him aim for it.

I have the exact situation going on too! Has always stood up for wees but will only poo with nappy on. I got a great email sent see the pooland thread which tells a story about poo wanting to go home to pooland but it can only get there down the toilet. My son is loving the story which i read to him every night in the bath. I have now put a star chart in the toilet with pictures of toys he wants from the argos cat and every time he asks for a nappy on we go to the toilet and i show him the pictures of what he could get if he did a poo in toilet. Today for the first time he asked to sit on the potty and did a pretend push. Nothing came out and he still did poo in nappy but a small bit of progress!!

this happend with us too - I backed off for a couple of weeks then started again. Much better now, sitting on potty for wee and poo (definitely sitting is better than standing, although it is a bit of a battle) and now he prefers to sit on toilet although he is still too small and sometimes falls in!!! or wees over the edge.
It will come when they are ready - there is nothing magic that you can do, i don't think. Frustrating, isnt it?!!?!

oh yes - chocolate buttons. one for a wee, 3 for a poo. That is the best bribe so far.
