Potty training

18 months, too young? So when to start?

My eldest ds never really potty trained as he hated the potty but started using the toilet about 2 and half as showed no indication of being ready before that.

My youngest is 18 months and since he was little we've said 'ohhh stinky poo' when we changed a poppy nappy. He then loves to carry them to the bin and wave goodbye.

The past two weeks, he's started tugging his nappy and saying (in his baby babble), 'stinky poo'. When we've checked, he has just done a poo. There have been a few times he said this and I thought he was just being silly as no poo but dh pointed out he'd just done a wee.

When do you decide to potty train. I really want to avoid doing it too early, are there other signs I should wait for?

I'd give it a go but in a very relaxed way. I wouldn't expect anything and maybe leave the nappies on for a while rather than going cold turkey - just see what happens.

Dd trained at around 18 months. Like your little one she was quite aware of being wet etc very early.

Ds is nearly 2.5 and shows no signs of either knowing he's going or wanting to use the toilet / potty at all! We tried a few weeks back and suggested he might want to try and sit on the potty and he looked at me like I was mad. He has no concept of being wet or doing a poo. Oh well. Grin

They all get there in the end - some earlier than others. I'd give it a try..

Did you just start with nappy free time and a potty? I'm due twins in 4 weeks so not sure if I should try but on the other hand I have potentially 4 weeks of being in the house with little else to do!

I have recently trained an 18 months old with great success. He has his occasional accidents, but they are few and far in between.

You can find my tips here: cutitkid.wordpress.com/2014/08/29/potty-training-diaper-free-in-one-week/

Both my brother and I were potty trained by 18mnths. My mum used traditional cloth nappies as the disposables were useless in the early 1980s so think there was a great incentive to get potty trained early! It can be done...
