Potty training DS: normal or disaster?

Hi,

We're having problems with the beginning of potty training for DS (2.5). After christmas, & after discussing it with him for a while (he's been showing all the signs of readiness for potty training) we bought a potty & toilet seat & some pants to do things gradually.

However, last week when this happened he would have none of the 'gradual' approach: he was super enthusiastic about wearing 'big boy pants', not wearing nappies (he refused nappies when we offered) & so we decided to go for it.

Friday Saturday & Sunday DP & I stayed home with DS & all went relatively well. He mostly told us when (or during) he wanted to 'wee' or 'poo' & managed many wees & even a poo on potty & toilet seat (he prefers toilet seat). We were hoping that all would continue well- as I said, DS seemed SUPER proud of his new potty & his new pants & his ability to poo & wee like a 'big boy' (as he said).

However, on day 4, which was yesterday (Monday) he went to nursery (he goes to full time nursery Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday & is well settled there). Disaster! At nursery he point blank refused to use toilet & to say anything to the staff. He kept having accident after accident, the same at home on monday evening.

This morning (day 5, tuesday) also started badly with refusal to go to toilet & an accident.

What to do? I'm very reluctant to completely stop & put him back in nappies as he was so excited by his new skill. But on the other hand he's clearly having some kind of reaction... What's best do you think?

I see some similarities with your DS and mine!

I have no idea for either, although I did actually wonder if mine was a bit shy and/or embarrassed at pre-school (he sends me out the room if he's pooing on potty). But yours is a bit too young to be embarrassed, isn't he? He sounded pleased as Punch.

I hope someone who has been there has some advice for us!

It's been very interesting so far.

First day at nursery this week: constant accidents.
Second day: he held wee in most of the day at nursery, peed loads during nap in nappy & then had lots of accidents once I picked him up & at home (our worst day so far)
Third day: still didn't like going to toilet at nursery but managed to wee there 3-4 times. still had a few accidents at home in afternoon, but later sat down on potty & did wee AND poo with lots of concentration.

Grin

Am delighted that there's some progress. And when I asked him (at the most difficult moments when I was considering giving up) whether he wants to go back in nappies or prefers pants, he's always been completely sure he prefers pants.

And he's a boy that knows his own mind... so I think we're in for the long hawl but hopefully we'll get there eventually. Sigh.
