What to expect from 6wk post natal check?

I'm due to have mine this week (at 8wks) and was wondering what type of things my gp will be checking. I've heard different things ranging from the gp just checking bp, to a full inspection of downstairs! Particularly after having had a third degree tear, I'm anxious to know what I should expect my gp to do, and what to ask of him if he doesn't! What experiences has anyone else had?

our 6 week checks only involved checking the baby's hip joints and reflexes

All mine asked were a few questions about how things were going. BP and weight. Was in and out within 5 mins. Probably depends on the individual GP. I also had a tear, but they just asked if everything felt ok.

mine involved no checks on me at all. did 1st jabs for dd, and checked her hips and neck strength. very quick. he booked smear for 6 months on, said it's no good having it at 6 week check cos lots come up abnormal but are false abnormal.

thanks for your input, there doesn't seem to be standard does there? I think this is really bad considering what the body goes through to have a child!

There are guidelines - your baby gets one at 8 weeks prior to immunisations, your should include asking about your mental and physical wellbeing, a smear or exam if required, questions about bleeding etc. You can decline the exams though.
