Career women, strong women, feisty women, blah blah blah

That thread about that poster reminded me of a bugbear of mine. Wondered how others felt..

You hear women described often thusly --- feisty, strong, career, etc etc.

But you never hear men described in those ways. A man with a job isn't a 'career man'. A man who speaks up for himself isn't a 'feisty man'. A man who can put up shelves isn't an 'independent man'.

Why do we get all these qualifiers? Aren't I just a woman? Is the fact I have a career, an adjustable spanner and a point of view really so worthy of comment?

They were talking about this on QI last night.

How women comedians have to be categorised in the same way. Men don't get the same treatment.

It is of course true. how we change it, I don't know.
