DH's take on the Hoon/Hewitt thing is that they knew it didn't have alolcat's chance in hell and did it purely out of personal spite. Do you think politicians can be as cynical as that? I find it hard to believe.

Hell knows. Apparently they both thought they should have had one of the juicy European jobs and were very bitter that they didn't get them. But there are also rumours that they must have had at least one Cabinet minister behind them, although whoever it is has yet to break cover.

It's a bloody awful mess, that's for sure.

Miliband seems to have been very seedily equivocal.

Lol at Paxman's question to Hoon: "if you were Brutus, Caesar would have been fine, wouldn't he?"

"Tu solo, Brutus?" [bad Latin]

Very funny policy. I am particularly fond of the Charlez Clarke one, and the first Lord Mandelkitteh

Yes poledra, I like those ones too

I didn't see Newsnight but heard that Paxo was in top form.

I'm loving the Peter Mandelson one!

I am, though, in a bit of despair about the Labour party and what is going on. It's just like the last days of the Tories. They don't seem to be able to see that there is need for a bit/lot of humility and 'getting down with the voters' and not silly in-fighting. Surely they can see that this isn't doing anyone any good, and only harming their chances further? What seemed like a bit of a recovery for Labour in the polls is surely going to be destroyed now.

It does seem utterly hopeless, doesn't it. But perhaps once they are into opposition they will have a major internal revolution, like the Benn reforms of post-1979 defeat. Like them in scale, I mean, not nec in detail. And we might end up with a principled party again. Trouble is, we can't afford the decade or so of Tory govt it will take.

DH has announced surprisingly that he is going to join the Labour Party post-electoral annihilation on the grounds that internal change will be achievable then. I wouldn't go near them, though.

Someone on Twitter had just pointed out that today is the eighth anniversary of Jennifer Brown's death.

I just don't know, re. the whole idea of replacing GB. I think not many people feel convinced about whether or not it would bring electoral advantage, which is why all these coup attempts are so ineffectual.

You're right though, it's just like the last days of the Major administration - except that the gap in the polls is a lot smaller that the gap between Blair and Major, and they would have a shot at avoiding a Tory electoral majority if they would just make up their bloody minds one way or the other.

It is very difficult to watch, if you have Labour sympathies.

It is extremely difficult to watch, as I have genetic Labour sympathies (my grandad threatened to come back and haunt us if we ever voted Tory. Mind you, it would be nice to see the old bugger again ).

I'm not even sure that GB is that useless. He followed someone who knew the value of PR, and how to be televisually (is that a word?) effective. He's not made that made - I have a lot of sympathy for a dour Scot. He also got lamped with some atrocious happenings outside his control (floods etc.). And who would you want in his place? A Milliband? All a bit Teflon Tony, IMHO.

I likes my politicians grumpy, can you tell?

for GB and Sarah, to have this on top of the anniversary of Jennifer's death - I imagine they just want to close the doors and pull the duvet over their heads.

here is a tip i heard on radio...

put on, or tie round a sock or stocking over the top of your shoes, helps prevent you slipping in the ice.

i tested it yesterday playing snowball fights with my grand son, worked a treat for both of us.

Ah right, I get you now

sfx - haven't read Harris yet but generally find him to be right on the money. Funny that someone can start out writing about Britpop and turn into such a good columnist.

Apparently Harman was involved in encouraging the whole thing!
