About Labour's next leader

So there'll be a battle between Momentum and the social democrats / centrists. I am totally against Long-Bailey who's been groomed as Corbyn mark 2 for a while now. I think she's awful. As much as I personally agree with the majority of views on MN and favour Kier Starmer, if I try to take myself out of my remain bubble for a minute and think about those northern leave voting 'wall' constituencies / Workington man etc etc, would they really go for Starmer? I'm not sure if they'd see him as another Westminster elite. (As they would Thornberry / Benn).

So thinking about how Labour can win back their 'heartlands' could Lisa Nandy be a goer? She voted remain but strongly sided with leave after the referendum (soft Brexit) and is from Wigan, popular with her constituents. A genuine human being, in it for the right reasons, articulate with quick intellect.

However she is a woman! Which the gammon might not like...

I looked at the runners for next leader and immediately thought Nandy was the best to have broad appeal...

watch them pick Long Bailey or Angela Raynor instead.... or even better Jess Phillips

BubblesBuddy · 13/12/2019 17:25

Jess Philips might not be interested. More of a back bench orator. Long Bailey is a puppet and not that bright. Angela And Rebecca won’t change anything and Labour need to change policies as well as their leader. Momentum won’t get that so if it’s more of the same, keep losing! They won’t get in for a long time until they realise it’s leader, sensible centre ground policies and ensuring all people benefit from policies
Is what counts. If you turn off the majority by far left policies you won’t get elected. It simply won’t happen! Scatter gun giveaway policies simply are not believed. Centre left must be regained.

EvilPea · 13/12/2019 17:27

They just said on the news tony Blair’s in meetings.

They can’t be thinking of him? Surely?

Biscuitsneeded · 13/12/2019 17:36

I think at this point I would be prepared to forgive Blair the Iraq fiasco. I'm thinking back to the halcyon days of the late 90s - Surestart, properly funded NHS and schools etc. But I'd also like to see Yvette Cooper as party leader.

EvilPea · 13/12/2019 17:56

They need a rebrand circa 90’s. But not Blair. They need a fresh untainted person without the questionable past .... and matching shoes.
I genuinely think they’d have done it this time if they’d not had corbyn.

tilder · 13/12/2019 18:13

When will voting on a new leader happen and how do you get a vote? Does it just need labour membership?

ACouchOfOnesOwn · 13/12/2019 18:22

If Jess Philips isn't interested then she's wasted a heck of a lot of time giving interviews to The Times positioning herself as a leadership candidate. Hmm Plus she's had Peston and JK Rowling basically endorsing her since Corbyn became leader.

But I don't think any of the ones mentioned will work. Jess, Kier, etc, don't understand why they lost. They don't appeal to Labour heartlands and they're not self-reflective enough to realise why. Blair or David Milliband would be a disaster but maybe Labour needs to face that disaster to realise that the golden Blair days they hark back to, aren't relevant to the UK in 2019.

Antigonads · 13/12/2019 18:25

And your use of the expression gammon is one of the myriad of reasons why the Labour Party tanked last night.

Halleli · 13/12/2019 18:26

Jess would have to get voted in by the Labour membership. And the majority of them hate her.

If we had open primaries, like in the US, where any member of the public can vote, then Jess would walk it.

With the system the way it is, we're going to end up with either Angela Rayner or Rebecca Wrong-Daily.

Redshoeblueshoe · 13/12/2019 18:33

Rebecca Wrong Daily Grin
Whilst Momentum are in the driving seat they can fuck right off

ACouchOfOnesOwn · 13/12/2019 18:39

I really don't know why people think this. I get that it's the 'view' of former Blairites but I don't know anyone in RL who likes Jess as a politician. Everyone I speak to, regardless of party, sees her as a craven careerist. She's a very divisive figure.

SilverySurfer · 13/12/2019 18:43

Surely a new leader won't make the slightest bit of difference while Momentum have their claws in the party?

caringcarer · 13/12/2019 18:45

Momentum won't allow a centre candidate and nor would trade unions. Remember they do the block vote thing. They favour Rebecca Long-Bailey. They say it must be a woman as Labour embarrassed they are only main party who have not had a woman leader. Kier Starmer is only popular with Remainers. Many leave voters can't stand him as shadow Brexit secretary who wants to negotiate a deal to leave then vote against it himself. He is very unpopular up North and in Midlands. Really you could not make it up. Jess Phillips might be a better choice but would she even want it?

ACouchOfOnesOwn · 13/12/2019 18:49

I think their best chance is to split the party tbh. This constant struggle between centrists and momentum is a complete disaster. It also allows them to each blame the other faction so no-one has to take responsibility and come up with a workable strategy. A decent statistician could have told them the second referendum would be a disaster for gaining and keeping seats.

tiggertogger · 13/12/2019 18:52

What about Rachel Reeves? Why is she always overlooked? Unions would never back Jess Philips

noodlenosefraggle · 13/12/2019 18:56

This. Alan Johnson pointed out John Landesman and Momentums contempt for the working class last night. He was spot on. Patronising and contemptuous at the same time.

Janaih · 13/12/2019 18:59

Yvette cooper would be my ideal. But I'll accept Emily thornberry.
So gutted its come to this.

SingingLily · 13/12/2019 19:03

Which the gammon might not like

Antigonads got there first but I picked this up straight away. If you are truly serious about getting out of what you refer to as your bubble, it might be a good idea to stop using terms like this.

However she is a woman!

As a Northerner, and one who lived a long time in Lisa Nandy's constituency of Wigan, I am pleased to tell you that Northern men are not only accustomed to there being strong independent women in their lives but they actually wouldn't much care if their MP - or party leader - was a woman as long as she was up to the job.

HTH.

GettingTooOldForThis · 13/12/2019 21:02

What about Andy Burnham?

Halleli · 13/12/2019 21:08

What about Andy Burnham?

He’s not an MP.

GettingTooOldForThis · 13/12/2019 21:42

He’s not an MP

He could become one again couldn’t he?

I think he stands for what I thought Labour stands for

itsgettingweird · 13/12/2019 21:45

Stephen Kinnock endorsed her this evening and endorsed the Labour Party having a woman leader.

I've also been a kier stamer fan but his issue was he wasn't a leave supporter and that decision had been made

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/12/2019 21:45

Unfortunately for now it will be someone Corbyn and co and Momentum will fully support so someone on the left

Please join the party the leader can be challenged and you will have a vote next time for that leader

madeyemoodysmum · 13/12/2019 21:50

Please not Angela Raynor. She is awful. So aggressive in her retorts

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/12/2019 21:55

She will be even more of an embarrassment
