And it being like death to your bones (or something like that). ie the wretchedness of a cold relationship where there is no love.

I'm no Bible scholar (not even a Christian in fact) but is it something like: Better a meal of herbs in a house where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred within?

I read that somewhere in Jane Eyre. Bronte was devout, I think Xmas Blush

Thank you Herrena. I recognise that one but it's not quite the one I'm looking for, which pulls no punches about the wretchedness of living in a loveless home.

Wasn't Bronte a vicar's/parson's daughter?

Pr 17:1 Better [is] a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices [with] strife. Any good?

Pr 21:9 [It is] better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house. Or this? (and can anyone tell me why mumsnet has gone all wonky on my phone? I've hardly started on the mulled wine..)
