Good cat and dog wormers, plus flea treatments, which you don't need to buy at the vet?

Anyone know of good quality wormers and flea treatments either online or in shops?

The vets charges are huge so thought there may be a cheaper option out there?

Pets at Home now sell Frontline, not sure if it is cheaper than the vet though, and you'd still need a seperate wormer.

Pet shop/supermarket wormers and flea treatments don't work and in the case of some, aren't tested at all and can be dangerous.

If you want to cut costs, you probably don't need ot use frontline or similar anywhere near as much as you are told you do, but worming is extremely important.

Frontline and Drontal, I would think. Both are readily available online and you can get a good price if you buy in bulk. Definitely stay away from any supermarket brands. The Drontal is a tablet though - can you get tablets down the cats OK?

Our cats and dogs all get Advocate from the vet, which is a spot-on that does fleas, mites, ticks and worms. They get it every month between June and September, and again in December and March - so six treatments per year. It costs about £7 per treatment, so for us it actually works out cheaper than buying Frontline and Drontal separately, and it covers more (the only thing it doesn't cover is tapeworm, so we have to treat the cats for that separately in summer because they hunt, but that costs pennies per tablet from the vet). I probably spend about £170 a year on the Advocate and tapeworm treatments for my lot, which works out at about £3.50 per animal per month. Cheaper than supermarket stuff, or anything I can buy online, and much more effective.

I've used Petmeds before and they give good service - they do six frontline cat treatments for £17.99 and Drontal for £1.50 per tablet (a bit more if you need the XL). Much cheaper than pet shops.

Meant to add - make sure you work out the 'real' price per treatment when you're looking at the Frontline and Drontal, as they might need more than one tablet or a larger spot on depending on their weight, so the price can shoot up. For example my labs would need three drontal tablets at £1.50 each, and they'd need the bigger Frontline at £28.85 for six. So that'd cost me about £9.50 per treatment instead of the £7 I pay for their Advocate.

yes have worked out all the sizings for my dogs on the drontal, but have 2 kittens (12 weeks) and not sure how much they weigh! So ordered 2. they may only need a half tab each?

Have you got scales? Weigh yourself, then pick the cat up and weigh yourself again, and the difference is the kitten's weight

I have looked into garlic and brewers yeats tablets. cheap, and apparently effective at flea AND worm control. Have ordered a bottle online and waiting to get mine on it. I prefer to use natiral stuff and these apparently work so worth a try.

hi, i am 20 weeks and we have one 1 year old dog.
I have been using Advocate for you but dont really want to and seems its not known to be safe around pregnancy women.
But have fear of not treating our dog.
Any one use Advocate while pregnant and have any advise or knowledge to help me decide

Think only advocate and milbemax protect against lungworm. Both only available on prescription.

Both our dogs were on advocate while I was pregnant. Never thought about it to be honest but both me and baby were fine

Not sure if it's the same with dogs, but I get advocate for my cats delivered monthly by subscription from pets at home, which is quite handy

I buy online from petfleas - advantage & drontal for my dog.
fleas do seem to get complacent with frontline my vet said so I try to alternate treatments

Coconut oil is amazing for a flea treatment. Just give them a teaspoon of it in their food every day. Mine haven't had a flea between them in 4 years now. Fleas just can't stand the smell of it. It also helps with doggy odour and makes their coats soft.

Coconut oil may be amazing, however it will do eff all to combat fleas. Sorry.
