It seems that they wouldn't pay out if Nemo needed further treatment for this FLUTD, what do I do??

No insurance company will pay out for a pre-existing condition. Not sure I understand what you mean by what will you do?

Hope it just disappeared.

I've got two cats about a year older than yours I think (born April 2002). Just over a year ago, one walked into the kitchen, squirted bloody (in the red sense of the word) urine all over the cupboard and yowled. Straight to vet. We had about 1-2 weeks of it - without blood - and I warned DD that we might have to get rid of him. Not just vet's bills (well we were insured) but the damamge that he could cause to furnishings would not be covered by home insurance.

Anyway, it cleared up and - touch wood - no problem since. Although my nerves go shot to pieces every time he lifts his tail and twitches it.

Cats are prone to cystitis. Have you discussed neutering w/your vet? The insurance is cheaper for a neutered animal.

Sue is right, it's usually a one off in a cat as young as yours. Repeat cystitis, however, is a common indicator or renal failure in older cats (renal/kidney failure is a common cause of death in older cats).

Thevet said it could come back, and if it did, they would have to have tests etc, so I thought I would get insurance but they won't pay out for it if it happened again as he was dignosised with it today IYKWIM.
I am hoping it was a one off and he will be ok, I did discuss neuturing with the vet and he said to give it 2 weeks for Nemo to get back to normal and then book him in, so in 2 weeks, I will be doing just that

sm,like you already know insurance companies won't insure for an exisiting illness/condition BUT you can still insure him but there would be an exclusion that you couldn't make any future claims if there are for this exisiting condition.

IMO (having just lost my cat today to renal failure) I would still insure as if your cat gets ill with somthing else (i so hope not) you can still claim for the treatment. Just to give an example: Treatment for the last week for my cat was £800+. Hopefully the insurance company will deal with this accordingly.

just read expats message..please don't take the comment I made about renal failure in the wrong context. I was using our cat as an example. He wasn't old (3) and had renal failure following on from a reaction to a general anesthetic 2 weeks ago. I am not saying this could happen to your cat.
I'm sure as long as you do everything recommended for your cat then previous condition will not return.

thanks sm. I would recommend Pet Plan. They are dealing with our claim now and tbh claims we have made in the past have been settled without any problems. They are also one of the biggest pet insurance companies and the main one that vets recognise. In our case with our cat being "hospitalised" for almost a week they (the vets) treated him and only wanted a £100 deposit as they we confident about payment due to us being with petplan.

My mum has also been with them for over 15 years and has never experienced any problems. IME to insure a "moggy" its around £5-£6 a month and our cat was siamese so it was around £12-£13 a month. Well worth it though. HTH. Let me know if you need any help.xx

i agree petplan is the best insurance company out there, our practice only recomend petplan. they also re-evaluate your policy every year and are known to include conditions that they havent in the past if they dont reocur in 2yrs (I think).

sorry also if you go to a vets that do petplan you can insure your pet there and then if it is healthy, you also get 2 free months if you do it this way.
