Petitions and activism

to ask you all to help with this

I've seen the power of mumsnet help with so many other petitions so thought you vipers might assist with this too.

Nazanin Ratcliffe, a charity worker from London, was detained at the airport in Iran in early April when returning from a visit to her family in the country. Her 1yo daughter, who was with her, had her British passport confiscated so has been forced to stay with Nazanin's parents in Iran. Nazanin is being held in prison in Iran without charge. Her British husband has started a petition to the UK govt to intervene and get Nazanin home. It's their daughter's 2nd birthday next week - she's currently looking at spending it without either of her parents.

AIBU to ask you all to sign the petition to help get Nazanin home? It's here

(Btw, I know there is a thread on this in petitions but it needs more visibility IMO so posting here for traffic)

I'm not sure calling everyone vipers will help your cause too much Hmm

WordGetsAround · 04/06/2016 19:07

Great cause. Bear it's a jokey reference to mumsnet being a 'best of vipers'. It's used as a badge of honour!

WordGetsAround · 04/06/2016 19:07

*nest

Bearbehind · 04/06/2016 19:09

I know what it is reference to, I just think calling everyone that without much humour and no 'please' in the thread isn't going to have people flocking to sign up however good the cause,

Gide · 04/06/2016 19:10

Done.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 04/06/2016 19:13

Yep let's ignore the poor woman's plight and pick the OP apart for her choice of words Hmm

louisagradgrind · 04/06/2016 19:13

How awful! I haven't heard of this case. What reason are they giving for treating her in this manner?

Have signed xx

MrsBobDylan · 04/06/2016 19:22

I saw her husband interviewed-what a heartbreaking, terrifying experience for her and her family.I hope she is freed soon.

MassDebate · 04/06/2016 19:28

louisa there's an unfounded, unparticularised allegation that Nazanin is a threat to Iran's national security. It came from nowhere; it's terrifying for her and her family.

Seriously Bearbehind? Have you never been on Mnet before? If you're offended at being called a viper you're on the wrong site Hmm

OP posts:
Roastbeefandyorkshires · 04/06/2016 19:34

Done.
I hope more people will sign and that she's freed soon.

Bearbehind · 04/06/2016 19:36

I've been on here a long time and I'm not offended, it's just that, for a post trying to elict help and support, I think it could have been much better worded.

It's not exactly been overrun with responses but it is actually worthy of much support.

RiverTam · 04/06/2016 19:37

And you're doing so much to help, Bear, aren't you?

Signed.

Bearbehind · 04/06/2016 19:38

I've signed, what else do you want me to do?

RiverTam · 04/06/2016 19:54

Stop going on? That's hardly helping the OP's cause, is it?

Bearbehind · 04/06/2016 19:58

Me going on actually keeps the thread nearer the top and might help get it more noticed.

The title doesn't do it any justice and it will be totally overlooked by most people.

MN does have quite a lot of power to help with situations like this but the OP and the title are far from making the most of that.

MassDebate · 04/06/2016 19:59

I keep reading my OP back and I still don't see what's wrong with it; this is AIBU after all. However, should anyone else feel professionally offended that my tone was wrong, I apologise. Please would you all sign to get Nazanin home.

done

DanceJunkie · 04/06/2016 20:08

Signed. Quite shocked that this hasn't had much press coverage.

honeysucklejasmine · 04/06/2016 20:14

I signed a while ago. Her husband and another man who's father is also detained have got together to raise awareness, they were on BBC Breakfast the other day. His father has been there over 5 years. Sad

I believe N's husband is asking people to send his daughter birthday cards. He's pretty good at updating the change.org petition page, so details may be there.

Signed and shared by this vituperative viper.
But a new title would get more signatures.

MassDebate · 04/06/2016 20:30

I titled the thread deliberately to try to draw in nosey people like me who might not otherwise click it. I have no idea how to report my own thread but will happily ask MNHQ to change the title if someone can direct me on how to do so!
