Does anyone know a great poem about PARENTS or MARRIAGE that I could read at my parents' Ruby Wedding?

Good old Philip Larkin

Found this on a web - site

Forty years together you have loved,
Opening a door to love for me.
Romantic hearts bequeath a harmony
That proves more rich than any life might prove.
Years pour like water rapidly downstream,
Yielding harvests gleaned in fields to come,
Each waiting for the heart to bring it home,
Accumulating in an undreamt dream.
Rejoice, then, in a beauty never gone,
Sustained by songs more sweet because passed on.

Bit odd in the scanning - probably a translation !!

had a lovely reading at my wedding - goes like this

Is there anything more beautiful than the sight of a young man and a young woman as they start their journey together (I'm adlibbing here can't remember exactly...)

And the answer is yes, there is something more beautiful. It is the sight of an old man and an old woman, hands knarled but still clasped etc etc etc ( sorry not really doing it justice)

I cry everything I read it. Can dig it out for you if you're interested? But not sure where it is.......

this is about enduring lurve...

Captain Corelli's Mandolin
Louis de Bernieres

Love is a temporary madness,
it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides.
And when it subsides you have to make a decision.
You have to work out whether your roots have so entwined together
that it is inconceivable that you should ever part.
Because this is what love is.
Love is not breathlessness,
it is not excitement,
it is not the promulgation of eternal passion.
That is just being "in love" which any fool can do.
Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away,
and this is both an art and a fortunate accident.
Those that truly love, have roots that grow towards each other underground,
and when all the pretty blossom have fallen from their branches,
they find that they are one tree and not two.

The question is asked "Is there anything more beautiful in life than a boy and girl clasping clean hands and pure heart in the path of marriage?"

And the answer is given, "Yes - there is a more beautiful thing; it is the spectacle of an old man and an old woman finishing their journey together on that path. Their hands are knarled but still clasped; their faces are seamed but radiant; their hearts are tired and bowed but still strong.

They have proved the happiness of marriage and have vindicated it from the jeers of cynics.

also the bits about children, to misquote:

"your children are not your children, they are the sons and the daughters of life's longing for itself..."
