My LO is 6 weeks old and currently co-sleeps (me propped up in a semi sitting position with him in my arms - not ideal!) He wakes up within 10 minutes if placed in his moses basket or cot. The problems seems to be that he doesn't like lying flat and will only sleep in my arms (at night) or wedged in a v-shaped pillow (day-time nap). Can anyone suggest what I could do about getting him to sleep in his cot?

have you tried putting a couple of books, so his cot is on a slant? our lo had reflux and hated being layed flat.
also, have you tried swaddling him? he may just simply like the feeling of being held.

You could try holding him until he is sound asleep and then putting him in cot. It can take 20 mins or so to fall asleep.

I've tried swaddling and he hated it - he seems to like to have his arms free. I have tried to put him down when he's sound asleep but within 20 mins - without fail - he'll start waking up and grumbling. I'm just concerned that if I continue to hold him at night he'll never want to sleep in his cot. As a new mum I'm worried that I'm getting into bad habits already!!

That sounds like my DS was! He too hated swaddling but used to wake himself by bashing crib sides with his arms, and onlt sleeping if cuddled.

TBH, he spent far too much time in our bed (although I lay down with arm around him) . I think we progressed more by working on the daytime naps. I warmed his carrycot with a hot water bottle for a few mins so sheets not cold, and lay him on his side with a rolled up blanket behind him and a smaller one by his tummy so he cudddled that. He also had a dummy. SOmetimes if he woke quickly I spent ages just rubbing his back etc and occassionally it worked.

Don't wind yourself up over bad habits at 6 weeks. It's very early days and he WILL settle.

DS ended up in his full size cot at about this age to stop him hitting the sides - it actually helped.
