Just wanted some sling advice really - we do lots of dog walking so ideally want something where baby is really secure and can use from the start - think have decided want a stretchy wrap and been looking here - www.bigmamaslings.co.uk/zen-cart/wraparound-slings-stretchy-wraparound-slings-c-104987.html

BUT is there really any difference between them? do they do different things? are some better than others? would you recommend anything else?

help!!!

I love my tricot slen from big mama's -its good if you're tall or broad (I am!) as its quite long, that's why i went for that but not sure about the other differences as not a sling expert. Hope someone comes along who is

The main difference is in the degree of stretch. More stretchy is easier to use for a tiny, but they grow out of it quicker. Less stretchy is a very slightly increased learning curve. I would go for less stretchy if doing it all again.

Don't know how the Hug a Bub falls on the stretchy spectrum, suspect it is quite stretchy. Moby is very stretchy.

Less stretchy are GypsyMama Bali Baby Stretch or the MAM Eco.

No stretchcy si going to be very cool in summer. If feeling brave you could go straight to the woven style and get a GypsyMama Bali Baby Breeze - which are gorgeous, but harder to learn with a newborn.

If you feel the heat you may want to switch to a mei tai, but by the time summer comes you'll have more experience of what you want.

If you buy secondhand you can sell on for about what you paid and therefore chop and change till you get things right. It is quite hard to find stretchy wraps on the second hand market though as they tend to get beaten up.

You can make a cheap stretchy wrap with about 5m of stretchy cotton jersey. Cut it down the middle, voila two wraps. You can experiment with tapered ends etc should you so desire. Use the tying instructions for Moby or any other stretchy wrap - easily found online.

There, everything pretty much I know about stretchy wraps. They're fab, used a Kari-Me (very stretchy) for the first 8 months or so but DS wasn't a heavy baby. Average babies would probs last about 6 months.

You can hire wraps/slings too, I did but I did different ones to the ones you are looking at. I hired from Bigmamaslings who were brilliant.

It helped me make a decision and I felt it was money well spent. I loved my mei tai but as I had a much older baby (I think he was 9 months) I went for an Ergo, which was brilliant as a sling on my front but because I am short in the body made it harder to get him into a good position on my back without help! I can get him onto my back but he is lower down so can't see over my shoulder. He is very nosy 23 month old now.

I have a Hug a Bub that I bought on e-bay for about £20 which was in perfect condition, I use it for walking the dogs with dd (9 weeks now) and have done since she was a week old. It is great but as Mrsboring says you could easily make one yourself from a length of jersey material.

Dd loves it and falls asleep immediately when she is in it, I also use it around the house if she is having a clingy day.

You can get the tying instructions on the Hug a Bub website.

I have a lovely moby D.

But I have also bought several lengths of stretchy cotton jersey, cut into 3 strips, and voila, 3 slings, 2 of which I pass on to other mums.

Just ensure it's a medium weight rather than a lightweight cotton, and off you go!

I've got a hug a bub and a moby and always pick the moby first. The hug a bub only gets used now if the moby is in the wash!

The hug a bub is narrower, so at first was easier to tie as less fabric. However I found it tricky to get a good fit as the middle panel pocket bit was always a bit flappy.

The moby is much wider, so more material. Bit harder to get the hang of tiying, but once tied right is MUCH more comfy

I've used both from birth with ds - my 4th child, but I only used pouch slings at this age with dd2 and dd3. I think stretchy wraps are only good until 6 ish months, after that the baby is too heavy to get a good fit.

Do you know about the yahoo group for buying and selling slings? that's where I got both of my wraps...
