Behavioural Appointment - waste of time

I took my son (6) to the doctor earlier on this year as I was concerned about his behaviour...as was the school.

Anyway, it was months and months ago and we finally got a letter last week with an apointment to see a behavioural expert.

The apointment was today and I feel so deflated. It was a waste of time...all he did was ask a few questions...told DS that he wouldn't be able to get a good job if he was always naughty at school (we've already tried to tell him this) and reminded him that father christmas only brings presents to good boys.

This is not going to help, it's all been said to him before. Anyway before we left he told me he would be phoning the school to speak to his teacher and he would phone me in a few weeks to see how we're getting on.

Has anyone else had much luck with these "behavioural experts"?

That sounds a pointless bit of advice.

Do you think there is something medically wrong with your son, or that he is very strong willed and doesn't want to do as he is told?

I have a 6 year old too and find him quite challenging at times.

What? Who was this person? I've had to deal with lots of professionals about ds and never come accross someone like this

I had some fantastic help from an educational psycologist and a play therapist. But I think there are huge variations in standards. I have never had anything like the 'help' you were offered. In fact the help i was given bore fantastic results within the fisrt 20 minutes.

(But DS does have profound issues so maybe my expert was more ....'profound' ?)

He's shouting out every five minutes in class, being a clown, disrupting everyone else, being told off for messing around in assembly...sometimes he has to do his work in the school corridoor so that he cant disrupt the class.

He's naughty at home, doesn't do as he's told, breaks things, fights constantly, he's rude, cheeky etc...

He even played the karate teacher up last night and I honestly thought he would be too intimidated by him to play him up.

I'm sure there is more to do this, adhd or something but sometimes I honestly cannot cope with him.

Go back to your GP and ask him to refer you to the Child developement team. He needs to be seen by a paediatrician if you want any real help

I have a treatment plan for ADHD if you'd like to have a look. The paed gave it to us when he first saw ds 3 years ago. Its hard work to start with but worked well with both ds and also dd who is fine.
