Do you tidy up for your children or do they have to do it?

Dd1 was moaning tonight when she had to tidy up her toys, telling me her friend never has to do it, her mum does it for her.

I know the mum and so I think dd is probably right.
Dd1 is five and a half.

We generally do it together. DD is 4y9m.

Depends HOW tidy I want things and how much time I have, i.e. is this just before bedtime? Dd (6) tidies up when I ask her to, doesn't do it otherwise. She is quite slapshod, just throws things in the wrong boxes and piles them up haphazardly on a shelf. That kind of thing.

I tend to do it with her. Let her start and then join in after a while. Sometimes I ask her to make a start on it and come and show me when she's made some progress, the rest we do together.

It's a pain, isn't it?

I nag my ds(4) to tidy up but get sick of the sound of my own voice sometimes.Dd is messy but it is really in her bedroom and she'll clean it up regularly.

I am a bit messy myself so probably not a good example.

If they have been art and crafty, then the main clutter and I will wipe up, clean up whatever dregs are left.
The arent allowed to drop dirty clothes in thier room, they are programmed to throw them in the hall....so I then walk past and collect them and put them in the laundry bin.
My house is never tidy though, there is always BITS everywhere, but they are expected to help muck in.
Their room gets gutted once a school term - LOL most of that time you cant see the carpet, but its not worth stressing about and they are having fun!

i'm like charliecat, if it is arts stuff I do the little stuff. But DD is required to put away paper, scissors & glue. In fact one of her chores is to keep her room (fairly) tidy & make her bed in the morning. DS (2) is also starting to tidy up too. Though I secretly think that I am lucky and they have both inherited DHs neatness gene.......

BTW also when friends come to play I make them all tidy before they go home such a slave driver

Oops worried I'm not making dd 6 yrs tidy up enough reading thread. Every night I tidy her room. Bit of a place for everything person , so I can fling everything back where it belongs in 10 mins. About once a week after friends had been round and bedroom was in complete tip she has to help. I thought making her help once a week taught her a lesson about housework??

DS 4.5 does it ? has done since?.well, since forever ? the toy fairy comes and takes anything left out after 7pm. (sometimes I help- normally weekends, but only AFTER he has started)

He had to help out with tidy up time at nursery and now has to do it at school so its business as usual for him.
