Well my ds1 walked 1 week after his 1st birthday, and ds2 walked at not quite 14 months however, dd is now 13months and isnt even trying to pull herself up!!! she holds her legs wide apart like she has been riding a horse when you pick her up and i have tried to hold her up once or twice near our sofa and encourage (gently of course) her to stand up on her own but she just curls her feet under and lets herself flop on the floor, she wont even try! im not worried yet but im no sure wether or not to try and encourage her abit more??? what do you all think?

If she can support her own weight in a standing position then I wouldn't worry, Charlotte. I walked at 8 months but my mother didn't walk until 15 months, babies are individuals just like adults.

she is still very young - but most children would be pulling themselves up before 14 - 16months. When you say "bum hops" do you mean shuffling on her bottom? Sometimes this is such a speedy way of getting around that they can't be bothered to try to walk. I would suggest asking clinic / HV / Gp whether you should be concerned. The only thing that occurs to me (as a rather old, out of date HV myself)is that I would want to be sure her hips were ok.

Yes - sorry, my post crossed with flack's. Ability to weight bear is the important issue.

It can be within the boundaries of 'normal' development for kids not to be walking up to around 18 months IIRC. If you are worried, speak to your HV though. I have several infants at our toddler group not walking at 13/14 months, and one of them bunnyhops (looks very cute )
I have also seen a child go from sitting to walking without a crawling/cruising stage at all - it was almost like he spent a long time just watching, and learning how to do it properly without any of that cruising nonsense!

My Dd went from sitting to walking, she couldnt even pull up on the furniture, but we could stand her up and she would walk!

If you feel something isn't quite right, why not go to the baby clinic or talk to your HV. That would be better than having a nagging anxiety at the back of your mind. No-one will think you're daft.

Twin 1 was 11 months, twin 2 11.5 months. This is the only milestone that sticks in my mind, no idea about anything else.

DD was 15 months to the day. She had a check up around 8 mths I remember and was not putting weight on her legs - GP checked her hips and said they were fine. She also bum shuffled for about 3 wks at around 9 mths then stopped.

GP told me not to worry and the average age for first walking is in fact 14 mths which surprised me as most you hear of are walking or walk on their 1st birthday. She also said that those that tend to walk a bit later tend to have less accidents on their feet - not sure about this one but it made me feel better!

Within a week of DD walking (she never took a few steps - just started walking) she was running better than those kids who had started walking months before her (and she STILL runs everywhere at 17 mths!!)

They do it in their own time. I am pretty sure if you had an 8 mth check that they would have picked up a problem with hips but it may be worth getting checked. I do know someone whose LO is in a hip brace at 10 mths as they didn't pick it up at the check or at birth sadly .
