DD makes up stories about other people

DD (5) has always had a good imagination, but lately the stories have been changing from funny to quite serious.

She is now making up lots of stories about people being unkind or hurting her - I would be concerned, but I am present lots of the time and I hear her making up stories and telling them to other children and adults.

Last night she told DH that grandpa hurt me with a knife! He didn't, she fell over.

She has also started to lie about things too. I always say that mummy won't be cross if you please tell me the truth and admit if you have done something, but she keeps on denying it until I prove to her why I know it's a lie.

I have spoken to her about this, but it doesn't really seem to have any effect.
I just don't know what to believe any more, which is such a shame as we have some lovely chats. It clearly isn't an attention seeking thing, as she gets an awful lot of attention.

I was going to read her 'The Boy who Cried Wolf' or something similar - does anyone have any good suggestions?

My niece is doing the exact same thing she's 5 too, last week she told the kids in her class her mummy died! It's so worrying.

She gets lots of attention and is popular in school but i still think it's an attention thing.

The boy who cried wolf is a great idea, obviously no advice but your not alone.

We went through this last year. Her friends did it too/ are going through it now. It stopped for us after a particularly spectacular story. I had to explain that making up stories about other people is like hitting them, and that the worse the story, the harder you are hitting. She got the same sanction as if she had injured someone by hitting with a weapon - which is no pudding for a whole week, and she had to write a letter to say sorry.
