When do I start to brush her teeth??

Ok, the fact I'm even having to post this makes me feel like the worst parent in the world (ok, slight exaggeration ) but Dd's teeth have started to emerge and I have no idea if I should be brushing them! Logic tells me that if she has teeth then she can get tooth decay (slightly early I suppose!) but this sort of thing wasn't covered in parenting classes at the health centre! How do you brush a babys teeth then? Any guidance greatly appreciated as seem to have no mind!

i started as soon as her first tooth started coming through. i used a finger tooth brush for a week or two and then a little soft toothbrush.

Thanks LL - more dim questions:
where can I buy a finger tooth brush? Would Boots have one?
Do you use toothpaste?

i think we bought our finger toothbrush in asda. and we use toothpaste for kids (like macleans milkteeth, oral b stages...) as they are lower in fluoride.
