Results board at University - BA with distinction - what does this mean????

DH went to Uni today to pick up his results from his last year of exams, but was too late. On the results board there was a list of 3 categories, one was 'resits' with a list of names and modules, one was simply 'BA' with a list of names and one was 'BA with distinction'.

Dh's name was under BA with distinction, does anyone know what results this may equate to?

I should think it means he has well and truly passed therefopre at least a 2.2 but prbably higher

I think its a higher class of honours degree, kind of like an A* for A levels. Not sure though as my institution doesn't offer it.

hmm okay then we're hoping it means above a 2.2!!!!

We were just wondering if anyone knew? I don't think it was anything important meant for students to see as he gets his results instead but seeing as we missed them we were hoping someone might know..

probably got a 2.1 or first so well done to ur dh. Distinction is usually used to highlight extra credits as such so prob 1st

some people get their degree with honours-others without.is it like that?

I think it depends on the institution.

Where I am, there is no such thing as a BA with Distinction, although you can get a Distinction for an MA.

In some institutions there is still a distinction between BA Hons and BA without Honours. An Honours degree is a Third or above, whereas a Pass without Honours would be somewhere between 35% and 40%. It's my impression, however, that this is disappearing. Nowadays, where I am, you get a Third or a Fail - nothing in between.

Alternatively, some subjects may give a distinction for a particular PART of the course. Hence (I teach Italian) we give a Distinction to people who get a First in their final oral exam, so it's possible to get a 2.1, but with a Distinction in Spoken Italian.

You really need to contact your dh's institution to find out what it means.

It's nothing to do with a dissertation... he's doing his now to get his BA but these are the results based on the coursework and exams. As of yesterday, he has his BA, the honours will come when he completes his dissertation...

We thought his results would come today, but no! They said they'd be posted first class yesterday....

Ahhh so he hasn;t got enough credits for his honours yet until the dissertation's handed in. In that case he has an overall mark of at least 70% (which equates to a 1st). So unless he completely b*ggers up the dissertation he will be on target for a 1st class honours!

(Honours degrees are classified 1st, upper/lower 2nd, 3rd and pass, whilst Ordinary degrees, Diplomas and Certifiacte of higher Education are classified pass or Distinction (and also merit at my university).
