cctv on traffic lights? can anyone help?!

Trying to figure out if the cameras sitting atop of some sets of traffic lights are cctv/police ones. Moved off before lights had changed from red (traffic on the other side had started to do so, and I thought the lights had malfunctioned on my side, turned out it wasn't the case), and am now completely paranoid that have officially jumped a red light, and will receive fine. It's doing my head in as I'm normally very scrupulous about driving carefully.

Police cameras to catch people jumping the lights will flash if triggered, like a speed camera, so if it didn't flash you're probably ok.

What they probably are are traffic control cameras so the people/computers in the control room can see how heavy the traffic is, how many cars are queueing etc and adjust the phases of the lights accordingly so the traffic flows smoothly.

Don't go mad worrying about it!

Scary how many cameras are pointing at you as you go about your daily life.

Forgot to say before that it was on a pedestrian crossing, one of the ones that films people crossing the road and waits until its clear before changing back to green (can't remember acronym). Would this make a difference? Needless to say crossing had been clear for some time before I moved on. I just can't stop worrying about this...

Don't worry - they are sensors. Depending on the type of crossing they either sense people or cars.
They are often mistaken for cameras

Mrs Badger... the cameras that look at heavy traffic are much much higher up in the air on big masts. The things on traffic signals don't "see" anything

Lilymum... it was probably a puffin crossing
