Do you think smoking will be banned?

Hi there

This is just a question i am putting out there- do u think all smoking will be banned in the future and ciggerates will be illegal?

I am a non smoker of four years and my husband and me always said when we stopped smoking- it will not be forever. Once our youngest- who is ten weeks now- turns 18 and leaves home (at 18 hopefully)..then we wll start smoking again. It may be long way off- we are looking at 2031, but its still something we both look fwd to.

Unlike many, we really enjoyed it, we even met during a ciggerate break when we were both 22 :)

However......the world is changing. do you think come 2031 ciggerates and alcohol will be contraband? that the world will be non smoking, non drinking .....that those who engage in 'sinful acts' will be outcasted?

do you think we will reach a stage where those who smoke will be incarcerated?

do you think everyone will be eating healthy food, taking regular exercise and we will be in the 'ideal state' where there wont be room for outcasts who like to light up?

I have no idea, but I do think you're utterly bonkers... why on earth would you give up for 18 years and then start again?

I gave up after 15 years of heavy smoking and it was bloody hard work. I went cold turkey because basically it was killing me. It was the hardest thing I've ever done, having a newborn and a toddler was a cakewalk compared to that. That's why I'll never start again because I can't go through all that effort again.

Plus it will kill you. If you've been successful enough to give up, why one earth would you want to start doing something that will kill you in the end?

I'd love to see smoking banned, but to be honest I don't think it'll happen. The tobacco lobby is too powerful, plus we don't have the resources to suddenly criminalise 16% of the population.

I love it....my husband loves it, we both love it.

You cant say we are bad people because we stopped to try for our son, who was concieved smoke free and we have stayed stopped four years, our children have never had any smoke, we wanted to raise our kids without it and we have have.

But we loved it, we will love to go back....but i think we are being good parnets by waiting till our children leave home, we are putting them first but after 18 years, surly we are entitled to start being a little selfish.

You're being good parents but if you should die of something caused by your past, or future smoking, then that;'s not entirely selfless iyswim...but we all make compromises to meet our own needs at the expense of those of our kids, so really, I don't think it's all bad.

I don't think that smoking will be banned but it may well be less popular an banned in public spaces by then.

Do you honestly think the treasury could survive without the insane amounts of tax poured in by smokers?!

How can you love something that makes you stink and has such a negative impact on your health?

And of course they won't be banned. Apart from the fact that too many politicians have too many fingers in too many tobacco company pies, there's the whole issue of the masses of tax that can be levied on cigarettes.

You've given up for four years and you're planning when you can start again?

Mad as bicycles...

Personally I think you're barking if you want to re-start. It rots your teeth, gives you wrinkles + cancer, you may as well burn money.

Anyway, yes, IMO it will be banned in 100 or so yrs when they've phased out driving in cars, further restricted public places, possibly around children and it gets insanely expensive. I guess the long term view is to chip away at it little by little.

I hope that drinking and smoking don't get banned, how foolish.
Plus, if everyone lives healthily we'll get to live until we are older than 100, no country can afford that.

What will you do if/when you have grandchildren - I bet your DC wouldn't want you to smoke around their DC or have you look after them a smelly smokey house.

do you think your children don't need you beyond the age of 18? I'm 42 and I still need my mum... for advice, support, love, comfort etc. She's my mother and until nature takes its course and takes her from me I'll need her. I would rather she didn't do anything to speed that process up.

Perhaps you don't want to live long enough to see your children married or have their own children. Perhaps you don't want to see your grandchildren grow up.

You are really very very silly if you think you're being a responsible parent to restart smoking again after 18 years of being smoke free. Being responsible is doing everything you can to be around for as long as possible for your children.

No, it won't be banned.

I'm planning to do the same. I'm not sticking around this shithole any longer than I have to to bring up my two surviving children. I expect them to leave the country as soon as they are 18, anyhow.

I'll go back to fags and hope it finishes me off.

I think if you want to start smoking again that is your choice, and yours alone,OP.
Most of us choose to do something unhealthy to some degree because we love it and it makes us feel happier,so I won't judge you.
I am an ex smoker - I won't ever start again, but I did love it!

I don't think it'll be banned but I think it'll become increasingly socially unaccepted.
