Bob Dylan fans - is this a disgrace or am I too narrow-minded?

RHCP cover Subterranean Homesick Blues. I stumbled across it on YouTube - is it a well known cover? I think it's hideous and it reinforces my belief that some songs should be "listed", like buildings, whereby no-one is ever allowed to mess around with them. Or should I get out more ?

rubbish, I don't care if they did a cover of it, it is crap, I will have to go and watch Dylan doing it now.

some Dylan songs are better sung by others.

A while back, when I wasnt very well, I bought that cover album by Brian Ferry! I am so ashamed.

mable - only if the band in question is The Byrds!

Another song that should be listed - Be My Baby by the mighty Ronettes. This is a cover by We Are Scientists - they should be taken out and shot IMHO.

I do massively love Dylan, and it's so not a good cover. But if I didn't know it was Dylan then I might think it was good and very Chillish?

I am the biggest Dylan fan you could meet.

I liked this cover though.

I'm not mad about covers which sound the same, but I have no objection with bands taking a song they like and doing it in their style. It will introduce RHCP fans to Dylan, and obviously there will be some who would never normally listen to Dylan, but may now.

Thom - your first comment on this thread - I could have written that. We are one, and the same..

did you see the comments on the link? someone saying Dylan covered this and it was written by rhcp?

I thought the chillis started okay with it, but half way through it lost my attention, I don't object to people doing covers, I think it is good for the same reason as DSM... but still I prefer Dylan's version.

I think Bob Dylan has said that the Bryan Ferry version of Hard Rain is better than his own version! So no need to be embarrassed chegirl
Also, All Along the Watch Tower by Jimi Hendrix and It's All Over Now Baby Blue, by Van Morrison are both great covers. Can't play youtube stuff on my computer, so can't comment on the RHCP cover.

He also said that the Hendrix version of All Along the Watchtower was better than his (a statement to which, I must agree)

I think lots of songwriters are more flattered by other people doing their songs than offended. Does anyone remember the cover of Wonderwall? Mike Flowers I think. Clearly Noel Gallagher gave permission, he must have liked it. And it got to Number 1 iirc.. (and it was clearly nowhere near as good as the original)

aefond - saw those comments. Please, dear god, let those be a joke.

oh that was a good link DSM, I love that and would say Cash did a pretty poignant cover of it.

A song perfomrmed by two very different people, but both amazing.

Proof that covers can be good.

Although, would anyone say no if Johnny cash wanted tom cover one of their songs? I think not.

My word, that was like having teeth pulled. The poor audience were probably just relieved the drum solo was finished.
