With luck you'll all know about our ongoing Respite Care campaign to make sure that disabled children and their families get the short breaks they need. If you don't, you can get up to speed here.
Short breaks are a really important service for disabled children and their families - a break from caring responsibilities for the parents, and a chance to do things with friends, and try new activities for their child.
Government funding was increased in 2011/12 - but the 'ring-fence' was removed. This means that local authorities can spend the money on other services if they wish.
BUT local authorities were required to publish a "short break service statement". This will help families to access short breaks - and make it easier to see if authorities aren't actually providing sufficient services (very important for campaigning purposes!)
So, our friends at Every Disabled Child Matters are asking MNers to make sure that their own local authority publishes this statement. It's really easy to do and will only take a minute, but it could make a big difference. So if you've got a mo, please do help them out.
Done, and about to follow the link again to see if I can copy it and post up on my facebook
Ah England only
great idea though!
Yes, revisiting the link brings up a fresh form to fill in

Oh, doesn't this need to be done just once per authority? And reported back?
Bombarding the same authority with 40 requests while the one next door gets zero is pointless.

Done - an easy way to do something really worthwhile (took me less than a minute - that organisation is certainly on the ball about how to get people to do things!).
Done. It would be good if they had a button to share on Facebook or Twitter at the end.
No need to do this for my local authority, they've already emailed out their statement on this (dd2 is disabled so am on mailing list). We have been able to have a short break for the last couple of years from this funding. Thanks for promoting this, it is vital for disabled children and their families.
