Some of you may have noticed from comments on other threads that I have been having a few problems with my DTs sleeping patterns. To cut a long story short, they went from cots to beds (separate rooms) several months ago and were fine for the first couple of months. Then, after various illnesses each, we ended up with a situation where they would only go to sleep if I led down with them until they nodded off. Being a SP, this meant that all 3 of us had to go in my bed. Before long it was taking more than an hour to get to bed, and due to the fact that they kept being distracted by each other, the bedtime story that they have each had since they were 3 months old (now nearly 2) went out of the window. Enough is enough I decided!!!

So, on tuesday night, I decided to start a new bedtime routine, going back to what we have always done. Milk, bath, bed (with story). My plan was to get them back in the habit of going to sleep by themselves, using the story as a quiet one-to-one time with mum to relax them and get them ready for sleep. I was braced for tantrums and all sorts, so lots of deep breaths and positive thinking while I was bathing them that first tuesday night. Carried it out with my little girl screaming her head off and my little boy whimpering a bit. Went back in 5 mins later and resettled them, thinking this could go on all night! 2 mins later and they were both fast asleep! Since then, every night they have just gone straight down. No tears, nothing! I'm gobsmacked!!!! Just goes to show that sometimes things are not as hard as they may first appear.

Well done on getting them to sleep, doesn't it gets harder as they get older and can talk to you! I used to leave mine to cry themselves down when they were babies but it no longer works with a toddler.

Isn't it always the things you are dreading that end up being the easiest? I got really stressed about taking my twins to the dentist for the first time - I had visions of them both flipping out and having to wrangle two howling toddlers in front of everyone. When the day came they loved it, fought over who got to sit in the chair first and left smiling and clutching a sticker.
