Just started, should I be looking at total carbs or the "of which sugars" bit.

Lots of foods have carbs that can be discarded because they are Low GI carbs.
ie. carbs from nuts and things like avocado can be discounted as incidental carbs because they do not trigger the insulin spike and you only need count the fats from these sources.

When going for a "low" carb diet you are essentially avoiding high GI Carbs (these are the countable carbs) because these are the type that trigger the response you are avoiding (Glycogen production)
so this would be high sugar /starchy foods such as white potatoes, bread / pasta / wheat, sweet potato, bananas, honey and even vegetables such as beetroot.

In addition to what I said; if you do not have macronutrient goals / count all macros (protein, fats, carbs) then there isn't much need to count any of it. Counting calories is pointless unless you know the ratios of each macro group you should be eating.

Okay, I have been avoiding:

Any type of wheat/flour product
Cereal
Fruit, including juice. (I have had a couple of strawberries and 5 blueberries though)
Sugar
Too many tomatoes
Milk

And counting the carbs on the packets.

Is that mostly right?

I have also had a few peanuts, but thought nuts were generally not allowed as the carb content can rack up if you have too many.

Thanks.

It sounds basically right to me. You would be best looking up one of the previous bootcamp threads. They have the Rules on the first post of each one.

I read the boot camp rules but I can't totally avoid processed foods unfortunately and have been drinking some fizzy diet drinks so I would be breaking their rules from the beginning...

I was a diet fizzy drink fiend too. I found swapping it for fizzy highland spring water quite easy.

It's more the taste tbh. :( I've been drinking mostly water though, I don't have a problem with water and drink tons of it. I find sometimes you just need a taste of some though, IYKWIM?
