Low-carb diets

Low carbing and supplements

DH and I have been low carbing since August and loving it. We started after reading the Briffa book, and didn't really follow any "diet" as such, just put Briffa's principles into practice.

I was given the Idiot Proof Diet cookbook for Xmas and reading the blurb at the start, they talk a lot about supplements, and remembering to take them. I haven't read their actual diet book, but is this something we should be doing too? If so, which supplements? We already take omega 3 capsules daily. Given all Briffa said about eating what we are evolved to eat, I can't imagine that cave man had a branch of boots the chemist to get his vitamins from! Wink

Can anyone shed some light for me?

I haven't read the book, but I know some pretty "purist" paleo people, who swear by proper homemade bone stocks for getting lots of minerals from, at least, and eating offal apparently also gives you plenty of vitamins.

I take a whole bunch of supplements, but not really because of LC. It would be a long list... Blush The only one I really feel I need is some magnesium in some form - otherwise I get leg cramps.

I take diaralyte to replace the salts that all the water is washing out, which has stopped me feeling dizzy. I also take the ones recomended in IPD and had good weight losson the last bootcamp. I may have lost the weight anyway, of course, without the supplements..... who knows?

Thanks both for your replies. I think we'll just stick to our omega supplements for now.

Interestingly, Jeremy Vine was talking about vitamins etc today and the conclusion seemed to be that, other than for a few select groups (eg pregnant women, children under 5 etc), they were a waste of time, as long as you ate a balanced and varied diet. I have never eaten as many vegetables as I have since starting to LC so hopefully I'll be ok!

Briffa does actually recommend some supplements but only for the first couple of weeks. Can't remember them off the top of my head but one is to have slightly salty water to replace lost salts and the other gutimain (sp) which is a protein that really easy to convert to energy oh and maybe chromium to help stablized blood sugar. The idea is to help ease you into the changing way your body is now working.
However if you have been going a couple of weeks I probably wouldn't start taking them now.

I take high strength Q10, B complex, fish oil and a multivit, Ive taken Q10 for years and really notice a difference when I run out and I can't find it on offer.

Hadn't heard of magnesium for cramps so definitely going to give that a try.
