New Boot Camp starting on 19 June. I've checked with @BIWI and she's said it's ok! Smile, so I'm not stepping on her toes.

I'm in desperate need of a proper Boot Camp as dh and I are off to South Africa in September as our 25th wedding anniversary present to ourselves. The discipline of running Boot Camp will help keep me focussed. I've run one before when BIWI wasn't available and although I'm not as knowledgeable and my Big Stick is not quite as big, with the help of all the other knowledgeable Boot Campers, we've still seen good results.

@FinallyHere here has volunteered again to be Spreadsheet Monitor Smile

If you want to join, please add your name.

Hi Prettybird,

Thanks for volunteering again! You may remember from the last bootcamp that I announced I was pregnant with number 2 (due at the start of September) and having fun with gestational diabetes again. So I'll be joining in with the intention of gaining rather than losing weight 😆

I've been struggling with staying motivated to stick to the GD diet this time round, partly because 37 weeks is so much longer to stick to it then "just" the 24 weeks I did last time round! I am thoroughly bored of all food, including cheese. Which I honestly never thought would be possible for me! So any new ideas on foods will be incredibly welcome!! How long are you planning on running it for?

Was tempted to boastfully mention my Spreadsheet Monitor badge, fortunately noticed in time that SM after my name might be misinterpreted.

I think I'd like to join, but the last two or three times I joined a bootcamp the threads were just too massive and posting on them felt a bit like whispering into a tornado.

I will try, though. I am still aspirationally low carb, but aspirations alone don't seem to be ketogenic. 😒😡

If it helps, @Random789 , I don't think this Boot Camp will be as fast moving as one that @BIWI runs. Like you, I've been aspirational for a few days at a time - but that's why I've volunteered to run this Boot Camp. I'll have to stick to it ShockGrin

@Skiphopbump - hopefully we can keep you motivated to stick more closely to this WoE. It does work - and I know in my case, it helps get me into a healthier, more positive state of mind Smile

Clutchpearlsandgasp · 10/06/2023 06:27

I've never been part of the boot camp before. What's the difference between spreadsheet and no spreadsheet? Is it recording progress with weight loss or measurements or something else? Thanks.

FinallyHere · 10/06/2023 07:37

@Clutchpearlsandgasp

By default, everyone signing up here will have their name added to the spreadsheet of fabulousness, they can record their weight at the start and weekly throughout the duration of the bootcamp and got a few weeks following.

There is, of course, no pressure for anyone to add their weight. There is, also, nothing to stop people adding their own name themselves and those who do are very welcome, too.

Some of us find the whole process of measuring and/or recoding weight troublesome and can be destabilised (driven to fall off the low carb bootcamp waggon or worse into disordered eating) by even the thought of recording that they set an intention of no engagement with the weight recording aspect of the spreadsheet.

Others find daily weighing and averaging of the inevitable ups and downs work well. I started as a no spreadsheet aficionado and progresses to monthly weighing (wishing I actually knew my max weight but having compassion for the self that could not weigh without either celebrating or commiseration with my self by changing what I ate. Shudder it was no way for me to live.

The wider title 'of fabulousness' is justified by all the other very useful parts of the spreadsheet. It includes a statement of 'the rules' of bootcamp, the ten points of 'how we do things around here' which include the magic no weighing & measuring etc, meal plans, carb counts for vegetables, meal plans and adaptations for vegetarians and women growing a brand new human.

The spreadsheet of fabulousness is always pinned to the first post of each new bootcamp thread. Only the tab for recording weight changes from bootcamp to bootcamp so you can look back to previous bootcamps to have a look at all the things it incorporates.

Goodness, I didn't expect that to turn into an essay. Hope that answers your question. Like bootcamp generally it's deceptively simple with plenty of richness to be discovered by doing bootcamp.

It is not a technique to follow halfheartedly, as I did for years before I knuckled down to it. Sticking with it for a couple of years have been completely transformation for me.

All the bests

FinallyHere · 10/06/2023 07:39

As soon as I posted, I remembered that lots of us also or instead record and track other measurements including waist size and clothes for generally.

Random789 · 10/06/2023 08:09

Great summary, @FinallyHere . Very helpful.

I want to try and make more use of the meal suggestions and similar info. I find at the moment that I tend to slum around flinging together meh piles of low carb foods.
The result of this slummy cooking is that each meal is unsatisfying, because my body hasn't been properly 'informed' (by a variety of interesting flavours and by a reasonably extended routine of food preparation and mindful consumption) that it has been fed and cared for.
So my body keeps saying 'more please', 'pudding please', 'snacks please'.

I crave some fairly strong satisfying flavours, and I don't think that there are many shortcuts to those that are compatible with a low carb diet.
It is striking, in the supermarket, that although several 'ways of eating' have been hijacked by food companies that flog processed food (low fat, 'plant-based', high-protein) there aren't many processed foods that are marketed as low-carb. No highly tasty low-carb 'shortcuts' (apart from a few idiotic looking 'keto' bars). Because, I suppose, tasty processed foods rely so heavily on all the nasties that make for a high-carb diet

So I am going to have to up my cooking game, and I really hope bootcamp will help me with that.

BIWI · 10/06/2023 08:14

<butts in>

I think @Random789 that the reason there aren't any meals/foods marketed as low carb, is because that goes against current NHS dietary guidelines - that 70% of our diet should be made up of carbs (or something - can't remember the exact figure). So ready meals are generally all based around carbs - be that rice, pasta or potato in some form. Or they're low calorie/low fat (and these days also more likely to be plant-based as that's the new way to make money trend).

M&S used to carry a lot more meals that would suit us (although they would probably have been a bit low on the fat), in their Count on Us and Balanced for You ranges - but they, too, have now reverted to being pretty caarb-heavy.

I think there's a real opportunity for someone to create a range of low carb-friendly foods/meals. If I had a bit more gumption (aka a lot of money!) I might investigate that myself. I think you'd probably only need to have 3 or 4 meals to get things going - so a shepherd's pie (obvs with celeriac or cauli mash rather than potato), similarly a fish pie, a chicken dish - Spanish chicken? - and something veggie.
