I've posted this in shorthaul travel, but it was suggested that I post it here, which seemed like a very good idea. I would be very grateful for any advice

We need to go to Hanover for a wedding and we are thinking of having our main holiday there too. We've got one son who will be 2 1/2.

Where would be a nice place to go? I was thinking of Lake Constanze but it is absolutely miles and would be a really long drive. Is there anywhere nearer to Hanover that is nice?

We normally camp tho I think we will try to find some self catering accomodation and just want to chill out and potter really.

The Harz isn't to far away from Hanover and it is lovely there

The Baltic coast is nice, and easy to get to from Hanover. Have a look at Sylt, or Norderney.

Or if you're feeling adventurous, Rügen which is in the former E. Germany and much less developed (and less chichi and expensive also).

Lots of sandy dunes and sea. Lovely.

If you stay a day or two in Hannover then a visit to the zoo would be fantastic, it is the best zoo that I have seen.

As Fairlady said, Harz is lovely. There are lots of campsites or selfcatering accomodation in that area. There is a great little steam railway on the Brocken mountain that might appeal to your DS.

You could head north towards the beaches, and have a day in Bremen or Hamburg on your way.

Heading south, the area around Fulda, and heading towards Wuerzburg is very scenic. Lots of vineyards and pretty little medieval towns. Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the Romantische Strasse, (Romantic road) is a nice area.

The zoo is fab...if you head more north, then the Jaderberg Zoo (Tierpark?) is nice, too...it's near my hometown, Oldenburg, which is about 1/2 hour from Bremen

If you fancy coast...all the Islands are nice, but only ever been to Wangerooge and Baltrum...both lovely!

Titisee - anywhere near there in the Black Forest - beautiful

but Black Forest is quite far away from Hanover...but indeed it is a beautyful part of germany, and near the swiss border, and you can then possible visit the Rheinfall of Schaffhausen, which is utterly stunning!
