Cruel mother I am - sent dd2 ( almost3) down stairs to get her shoes - she takes a long time, I get cranky as we are running late to get dd1 from school. Go and put dd3 int he car - come back to find dd2 with a different pair of shoes requiring my help and time to put on.

Get cross with her - go down stairs myself to find a huge huntsman loofah on the door near the door handle. Huge - size of my hand almost!!!!!!!!

Poor wee thing ( dd2 that is) was probably terrified and all she can hear is her mother ranting at her to get ready.

Where is ghosty's belt when you need it Okay big spider but nothing a size 11 thong can't handle.

When I asked dd2 was that why she did not go into the room she just nodded with a scared look on her face.

You have my sympathy - as does your poor dd2. Shortly after we moved here I was straighting DDs bed before putting her in, bent down to plump the pillow and found my nose a few inches away from a huge huntsman on the wall behind the bedhead. As a recovering arachnaphobe I am still very proud of my general calmness around the whole event. Got someone in to spray the house within 24 hours though and haven't even seen a house loofah inside since!

sunny - we very rarely have them - generally they are in the shed/garage but not many downstairs. It was rather large.... even I paused but then did what any self respecting woman would do - whacked it with dh's thong

Whimper, whimper. Are they poisonous? How can you live with this? Do you not permanently feel like the crew of the spaceship in the film Alien, just waiting for The Thing to appear?

nah - as I said - rarely get them in the house - they seem to prefer the shed/garage along with the redbacks

Oh christ...mostly I am dreading my first massive beastie encounter but also am a tad curious to see just how freaky the things are & what my reaction will be. Moving into our house next week which backs onto bush so it is only a matter of time.
