Motorhome. NZ. 18 month old ds. Good Idea?

Hi all. We're currently living in Oz and are planning a couple of weeks in NZ at the begining of December. We will have to be in Auckland for the first 5/6 days due to DHs work but am planning to tour after that. DS will be 18 months old so is a motorhome going to be a good idea? If not, what else would be good? Also, any suggestions of where to tour to??

Never done the motorhome thing so I can't help you there, but we've had good holidays driving a car and staying in motels.

Where to go depends a bit on how long you have and how much driving you want to do. The South Island is more scenic but there's stuff to see wherever you are.

The northern South Island (Kaikoura, Marlborough Sounds, Nelson, Golden Bay) is a lovely area to explore, although possibly quite crowded in school holidays.

At that age I would go for car and motels, there are plenty of slightly older ones with full cooking and a lounge and bedroom (or rooms).

I would carefully at the plans to see if a motorhome is even possible with this age child. I seem to remember that we couldn't when ds was 18 months because all the sleeping of the ones we could afford involved ds being up in a bunk!

If you have only got a week and a bit and are starting in Auckland I would do the North Island (and that's speaking as a Christchurch resident). Or take advantage of the cheap fares at the moment and do Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and rent a car in each location.

Ooh, yes, good idea about flights twentypence.

There's a price war going on so there could well be cheap flights.

Lots to do for toddlers in Wellington and Christchurch.

thanks! had my heart set on a motorhome (freedom of the open roads an all that) but will perhaps have to wait until ds is older.
