Living overseas

Any other US or other Country Expat living in the UK?

In my search for potty training help, I ended up at this terrific website and joined.

We've been here 8 months and live near York.

Any other 'newbies' to the UK here?
Where are you located in the UK?

Look forward to making some cyber-space friends

I'm from the US, but Scotland is my home for nearly 5 years now and I am a recently naturalised Brit. I am married to a Scot and my two children are Scots who happen to have an American mother.

This is a British board, if you're specifically looking for other American expats there are some boards about designed ofr American expats to the UK.

Although I do have some expat pals - from the US and other places, all of whom are long-term expats like myself - I've found many friends here among the Brits.

Give it a try! They don't bite! Well, some members excepted .

Hi expatinscotland

Scotland is beautiful, we were there earlier this year.

I found some boards that were specific for U.S. Expats, some don't like where they are, they resist everything about it. We like the opportunity to learn about different cultures and people from around the world or a specific country. Change can be a good thing, it is all about your attitude.

We love the UK and aren't ready to move back to the US anytime soon.

Where were you from in the states? Do you have family there or elsewhere in the states? We moved from Atlanta and DH has family in NJ.

Welcome Kameko. I have lived in the US for an extended period of time as well as in Belize and the UK. You're right, you can't resist where you are living. they all have their good and bad points. I am an hour away from York, just outside Durham City. I have a 15 month old and need to wisen up on potty training too!

I'm in Edinburgh.

I was born in Houston, TX. But we lived abroad for a total of 8 years growing up b/c of my dad's job as a petroleum engineer.

Then I lived abroad as a student for 2 years.

Now I am here.

My sister and her husband and family are still in TX. My parents have always kept a house in Houston, but they are now retired and have some other properties, including in Mexico, as my dad is a dual national, so they move around and spend increasing amounts of time in Mexico.

My mu is also a dual national - US/France - so they spend time in Europe as well.

It's nice when the parent has EU nationality b/c then they don't have big visa issues coming to the UK.

I'm American too. I'm from Chicago, but also lived in Houston for about 10 years. I am married to an Englishman and we live West of London (inside the M25). I work full time and have 2 kids aged 1 and 3.

Oh Expat, I didn't know your dad was a petroleum engineer -- of course no reason I would know that.

He worked for Royal Dutch Shell from 1965 - 19 . .. , shit, I can't remember when he retired! Seems like forever. He's 70 now.

He worked offshore a lot of times w/o us, too - Alaska, Louisiana, Aberdeen, Norway, etc.

Some of the more 'exotic' assignments we didn't go on. But in the 80s w/the crash, it was go abroad or lose your job. He felt he had a duty to provide as best he could, so away he went!

Ah yes, the industry is like that. Takes you to places you never would have otherwise known existed.

I went to Atyrau Kazakhstan last month. But, they are threatening to send my to Italy in a couple weeks, so I guess that makes up for it.

I'm also an expat, born in New York and grew up in California. My parents recently moved to Idaho so we call that our second home. I'm married to a brit, and our son (age 3 in Oct.) has dual citizenship. We live near Derby and i have lived here for 6 years this summer. I'm also new to mumsnet.

My dad got all the really plummy assignments AFTER I'd gone to uni .

Hello everyone ! I am too from the US (hence the name) orginally from OH, but DH & I loved in NJ near Philly for just under 4 yrs before moving here. I've been in the UK for 11 yrs now . how the time has flown Been married to my Brit for 14 yrs now. We live in Bishops Stortford, near Stansted. Both my DD (5.5) & DS( 2) are duals and we're planning a trip back to the US next summer.

I don't know any expats (!) In fact, most Americans think I am british from the accent, but my Brit friends think that is very strange as they all think I sound American.

hello, as of sat. the 23rd I will be living in the UK for at least 1 year. Also lived in the UK 2002-2003 (how I learned about mumsnet). I am canadian, raised on the east coast but have been in ottawa for the last 2 years. CAn't wait to get back to the UK though. Really loved the UK, I always tell my canadian friends if I won the lottery, I would buy myself a cottage in the UK, write mystery novels and live quite happily here.

Hi there, my oldest ds is married to a lovely American girl and they live in LA. I don't think they'll ever live in the UK again, sadly, though as I live abroad as well, I guess it doesn't make that much difference.....

Yes Sue, it's difficult being so far away from family...Although at times I think it's harder for my Mom than for myself! She's had a much harder time with my being so far away since I've been pg. Luckily for her peace of mind, she'll be flying out for her first visit just after my due date! (hope I'm not in hospital when she arrives!)

Hello everyone! I am originally from Tennessee (have lived in Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama as well) but have lived in the UK for the past 5 years. Married to a Brit and have a 4 yr old daughter. Would love to meet other Americans in the UK. The only other American I met in the UK couldn't take the cold weather and moved back to Florida! I live in Halesowen, West Midlands. I am a bit homesick!
