When we named our dd3 we gave her a Danish name for a middle name. it has in it a Danish letter that doesn't exist in the English alphabet ø (o with a / through it if that doesn't come through) When pregnant with her I phoned up the official office that dealt with this and queried if we could do this. I was told it would be done as it was an actual name in Denmark and there would be roots (I am Danish - not sure why the latter had anything to do with it)
On the day I went to register her (she is our 4th) dh didn't come with me and there had been a car accident in the town center and parking at the hospital (where the registrar was) was a nightmare result was I arrived about 4 minutes late and rather hassled.
The registrar was blase about the name said they can't have all the letters (interestingly they had both the other 2 letters that exists in the Danish alphabet) and claimed I ought to have checked " with her" I was frazzled had a baby who needed a feed and I gave in and on the birth certificate her name is written down with a o and the registrar has put a biro / through it. I thought at the time "I can live with this" though I was very disappointed as was dh when I came home.
She is now 9 and it annoys me EVERY time I have to get her birth certificate out. It has come up again as I yesterday took dd2 to get her first British passport (up to now they have all had Danish passports - dh is British) and it occurred to me that will mean when it is dd3 to get her first British she will no longer have anywhere official that has her proper name on it.
She is named after my much loved grandfather (feminine version of his name) and I will admit it is personal to me due to that.
Is there any possibility of getting it corrected to the right name? I know my dh would be in full support as he feels like I do about the issue.
