The Tax man cometh

Just wondered if anyone could advise me on this.
I have been working for a well known organisation for 7 years as self employed and taxed accordingly. It now transpires that due to the length of time i have worked there as self employed the tax man has told my employer that i should not have been employed this way and should have been PAYE, and that regardless of the tax and NI i have paid they are liable for the full amount for the 7 years and at PAYE tax rate. I have obviously looked into this and this is right and i am not liable to pay any of this. despite this my employer is asking me to supply information on the tax i have paid so that they can try to reduce the amount they owe and have insinuated they they would look into trying to claim some of the money back off me or i claim the money back from the taxman and give it to them. I know that they are liable for this but am feeling a little pressurised to make this my responsibility and the working atmosphere is a little tense. There has been no demands but if anyone can advise me because today i asked if i could take some holidays (from march i became employed on a 12 month contract with them) in order to get further advice, it doesnt look like they are going to allow it.

I also have another question regarding this, i would not even have considered anything like this but because im feeling pressurised i think i should find out where i stand. As my status for the last 7 years has changed to employed would i be able to do anything about claiming for all the unpaid holiday entitlement and employer pension contributions that i obviously never recieved. Like i say i probably wont do anything about claiming it but i need to have something to make it clear that im not an idiot that will roll over and pay for their mistake. i Know this sounds a little money grabbing claiming holidays but this is a multi national organisation with a budget of billions, yes thats right billions, also they have a team of accountants and lawyers employed and ive just got me and my family facing this.
To anyone who managed to read this all the way to the bottom thank you for taking the time to read it.

there are very clever bods who have helped all sides on such messy situations

BUT
I think your 'employer' is rather trying it on to dump on you when they are the ones who have been caught

Thanks for the reply and link, from what ive read this seems to be the case but its hard being one against many, the fact there have been no threats or demands would also suggest they are aware the liability is theirs.

If HMRC thought you owed money, by golly you would know about it !!!

Big PLCs have been abusing the IR35 system for years and years.
Make sure that your effective start date is backdated to ensure you accrue redundancy / pension / bonus rights etc etc

feel no guilt - they won't ;-)
