A councillor in Cornwall was forced to resign a couple of months ago after making comments suggesting that children with disabilities should be put down at birth. Unfortunately he stood for re-election in May and won his seat by 4 votes. He has since made similar offensive comments, comparing the cost of public toilets in Cornwall to those of caring for a disabled child. My adorable, special nephew is one of those in Cornwall that Colin Brewer considers to be a waste of money.
Mencap are helping to publicise this case and the police are currently investigating the most recent comments made (which can be seen on the Disability News Service website). I would be grateful if anyone here would support Mencap's petition given below.
Mencaps statement:
Disgraced councillor Collin Brewer has caused further outrage by comparing children with a learning disability to deformed lambs who "would be put down, smashed against the wall and dealt with".
Mencap has tried to contact Mr Brewer without success. We feel that his comments are appalling and unacceptable and that consequently, he should stand down.
Children with disabilities are #notaburden.
