Whilst I'm glad it seems the govt understand that an automatic block won't work, I'm a bit about how this proposed blocking will work in reality.

It seems from reading the text that the government are going to push for software based parental controls to be installed on all new computers. Probably a sensible compromise. However what is unclear is how this 'age verification system' is going to work, to stop kids from setting up the porn filter themselves.

Mrs Perry said effective checks on the age of a person setting up filters ? probably using credit card details and the electoral roll ? would be vital to ensure children could not get round the new system.

Oh right....that foolproof way of checking your age. Enter a credit card number. No chance my enterprising child would borrow my credit card then out of my wallet. Will it be checking to see if my credit card is just a valid number or a legit card? Because credit card numbers are easy to come by. That's why all retailers have to check name, addresses & CCV numbers.

What if I don't have a credit card? What if I just have a bank cash card? Plenty of people don't have credit cards. What then? The electoral roll? How will it check? Ask me to confirm my name, address & date of birth? Even my five year old knows those details!

I'm cautiously supportive of the proposals except the unnecessary age verification system.

Since the only DCs likely to want to get round porn blocks are 12+ yo boys, I suspect your right.

Non of those things are going to slow them down at all.

Apart from deciding what is porn, half the DM's celeb shots are soft porn, every pop video is.

DD2 (11) certainly wasn't convinced there should be people having sex on her free games site. This was a Home office anti rape ad.

Does this mean the government have to block themselves? Who decides?

DD has had an unfiltered lap top in her room since she was six, she was fairly shocked at the ad. Her reaction definitely suggested she didn't normally come across that sort of thing.

How will turning a new pc on and going through automatic filter pop ups work if you build your own pcs?

If you format your HDD for some reason will the software be lost?

What about kids that know more than their parents about pcs and who will find the filters and where to change them if they want in a very short time?

Something that automatically installs software on my pc if I connect to the internet is a virus and unwanted as far as I am concerned!

How will this stop kids from taking photos of themselves on their phones/tables/whatever the latest gizmo they have is and emailing to their school friends? Or stop a kid from taking pics for their girl/boy friend and sending that to all their mates?

Totally agree about celeb shots and music videos and that porn differs from person to person. Some people are fine with page 3 naked tits others think it is wrong. Who decides? If it is decided that is porn and unacceptable for filters then it should be in the paper?

If you have parents who don't care they are unlikely to bother setting the filters. The ones who do care are already doing something I would imagine. This won't change much.

Best porn filter I have is sitting in the same room as DS. He is only 11 so far but no boy is going to want to watch that with their mnther sitting in the same room!

I dont have filters on my pc or laptop. What i do is sit in the same room & check whats she is doing. She doesnt have a mobile and wont b getting one until shes a teenager at least (shes 8).

To me that is the only thing that Is guaranteed to stop kids watching porn. Filters wont work.
