Now stop reading this and neglecting that child of yours...

Erm, maybe once in a while Blush

earwicga · 10/02/2011 08:32

Hahahahahahaha!

Only got half way through. What's the gist? Women = bad?

Alouiseg · 10/02/2011 08:35

As we are so computer literate we can moderate and enhance our own childrens on line experience. Unlike those Luddites that prefer to read the paper copy of the Daily Fail.

EdieSedgwick · 10/02/2011 08:36

Ha Ha...I know. Yes bascially it's the new middle class neglect and that children are showing signs of anxiety due to mums internet use.

This was the best bit...'With recent reports claiming that 70 per cent of two to five-year-olds can use a computer while only 20 per cent can ride a bike, and a Government-backed report proposing a national scheme to encourage parents to cuddle their children more'

:)

I'm sure most of us manage to strike the right balance! Smile

I did go to visit one family to help the mum complete DLA forms for her little girl. The whole time I was there she was playing on-line bingo!! I had to keep repeating myself to attract her attention. I couldn't concentrate because the site she was on had clapping, money dropping and cheering noises to spur you on to play more.

Her lovely little girl was sat there, clearly used to being ignored. I remember thinking,if the mum is like this with visitors in the house, how much time does she spend on-line?

earwicga · 10/02/2011 08:39

My 8yo kids can't ride a bike and I've only been online for 2 years. Explain that Daily Fail!!

EdieSedgwick · 10/02/2011 08:40

Durham that's really sad. No mention of bingo though in the article...just us MNetters.

If the mum had been on Mumsnet it would at least have been quiet. No clapping and cheering! Grin

EdieSedgwick · 10/02/2011 08:45

what a great idea. MNHQ should totally add a clapping and cheering sound! Grin

I think it's true, I hate myself for going on the internet.

manicbmc · 10/02/2011 08:46

Having your laptop on when you have a guest (especially one who's there trying to help you - because my god those DLA forms are a bitch) is just very bad manners. It's like having the tv on.

Notfelinefine · 10/02/2011 08:47

Yeah but 80 years ago we would have been ignoring them while putting the washing through a mangle, 70 years ago we would have been working in the factories or digging for England, 40 years ago we would have been at CND rallies, 30 years ago we would have been going straight back to work after 2 months so there really hasn't ever been a golden age of parenting. Just skimmed the article, presumably no mention of dads coming in from work going straight online, or looking after the kids at the weekend glued to sky sports?

DurhamDurham · 10/02/2011 08:47

And 'Booing' for AIBU! Grin

southeastastra · 10/02/2011 08:47

i think part of it are true too Blush

DurhamDurham · 10/02/2011 08:49

manic I would guess that in almost half the houses I go in to te tv is on. It's usually Jeremy Kyle. Most people are lovely and I often get offered coffee and chocolate biscuits. When it was snowing one mum had tea and toast waiting for me Smile

manicbmc · 10/02/2011 08:50

My mam ignored us lot because she was reading. I followed suit and ignored my lot by having a terrible tetris addiction. Grin

It's about striking a balance though.

manicbmc · 10/02/2011 08:51

Do you work in Welfare Rights? I love my welfare rights lady - she's fantastic and very deserving of my coffee and chocolate biscuits. Smile

Good heavens, what an appalling thing to happen. Those poor children. How could any mother do that? They'll be talking to each other next and then civilisation really will come to an end!

I think we should ban mothers from the internet, for the good of the kiddies.

EdieSedgwick · 10/02/2011 08:54

NFF Totally agree. It's just another way of making mums feel bad.

I'm a Benefits Advisor for a charity. I love it, I rarely meet awful people so the ones that are stick in my mind. I get thank you cards that literally make me cry. Most rewarding job I've had and I have such a laugh with some of the families I work with.

manicbmc · 10/02/2011 08:57

I don't do guilt. Grin

When my kids were little I'd wait until they were in bed and then go online. The only person getting ignored was the ex but he deserved it as he was usually pissed.

DurhamDurham · 10/02/2011 09:04

My (teenage) children ignore me when they are on the internet. They spend ages talking to friends on FB and Bebo. These are same friends that they have been with all day long.

donkeyderby · 10/02/2011 09:08

While women are online, presumably modern men are filling the gap and playing chess/Monopoly with the DC's, taking them on nature walks and cooking nutritious meals from scratch.

PrettyCandles · 10/02/2011 09:13

So, only 20 per cent of 2-5yos can ride a bike? And? I very much doubt that statistic was much higher when I was a child. Most of us got bikes once we had started school.

Other than that, yeah, I neglect my dc in order to MN. Oh dear, look how they struggle at school, how disruptive their behaviour is (ds2 has just poked me with a very painful fairy wand to get my attention Grin), my house is a tip, etc etc etc.

The usual tarring of all mothers with the same brush, because, yes, it's true, we do have a problem with some children being neglected for OL stuff.
