How long should it take? I ask because we have an inherited Miele and each cycle takes at least 2 hours - is that normal?

1.5-2 hours is Normal for our machine which is a 2 yo Bosch. It does have a quick cycle which is very effective, though: only 30 min., I think.

we have a miele and it's normal cycle is about 2 hours, the economy one is about 3 hours (we use that one most often).

It does have various other cycles but we don't use them much.

Can a dishwasher expert please explain how it can take that long?

our Eco cycle is 2 hrs 20 mins and the normal daily cycle is 2hrs 30mins (Bosche machine). There is also an express setting that takes 29mins but doesnt do the drying cycle. There is also a quicker wash setting that halves the normal cycle times e.g. the eco wash reduces to 1 hr 10 mins as it then uses more energy and hotter water to do the same job.

I only ever use one cycle on our John Lewis machine (its called Auto) and that takes 108 - 115 minutes.

for a normal cycle - ours takes 2 hours odd

I always do it on 30 min quickie - no drying and it's fine.

Mine's a Bosch & like mloo's the quick cycle is 30 mins, the ordinary one pushing 2 hours.

I always use the quick one too. When it was new the things didn't seem to dry properly but they do now.

our normal cycle is fifty six minutes and doesn't dry massively well (which i am fine with as it's a double drawer so stuff can stay in there until whenever).

I've got the Bosch one a well... no idea why it takes so bleeding long.

How Stuff Works: Dishwashers

Dishwasher was invented by Josephine Cochrane - Pattented in 1886 ... wonder how much it's changed over the years, probably not that much!

Dishwasher Basic Principles

Not sure any of those will help much though with regard to why it takes a certain amount of time to complete a wash. Though some dishwashers have sensors in them to monitor how dirty the water is (such as the John Lewis one with the Auto Wash) which will then vary the cycle length if the dishes are clean before the timer gets to max time length.

Usually 77 minutes on our Bosch - it displays that at the start of the cycle. Some days it decides to make it a bit longer, for reasons of its own... reasons too fiendishly clever for us mortals to understand no doubt
