I keep finding wasps in my house, please tell me how to find the nest

I keep finding wasps inside my house and there seem to be plenty of them flying near my windows in the outside.

I don't remember having this in previous years, so I suspect they may be building a nest somewhere near. I would like to find it before it grows too big, can you please suggest places it could be hidden?

There won't be a nest, not yet. All the wasps you're finding (we have them too!) are Queens, looking for somewhere to make their nests. Soon, the wasp invasion will dry up until June or so, when the smaller wasps hatch out. So I wouldn't worry about needing to find a nest, although of couse if you clobber a Queen, that'll be one nest fewer to worry about later on!

(note: I am not suggesting ethnic cleansing of wasps, but I'm afraid I always find it quite satisfying to nobble a queen wasp at this time of year. )

When we had a nest, they flew around the place in the wall where they had a little entrance...it was above the kitchen door, in an old victorian house and there was a sloping roof above the kitchen out the back.

The nest was like a paper lampshade. We ignored them for ages but they kept coming down through the light fitting into the kitchen and eventually a bloke came and sprayed the nest

If you watch the walls you might see them disappear in and that's where the nest might be.

there are false 'nests' you can buy to make wasps think there is already a nest in the area, not sure what the reviews are but if i find the address again i can post it on mn for you?

oh, I'm glad I read this. We keep getting wasps at the moment. One was inside DD's sock when I put it on her - from hanging on the line......just got away with not being stung. And they keep being in the house.
I guess they're coming out of hibernation then.

Yep, they are just trying to find somewhere to nest right now. Saw a queen wasp trying to get in my beehive at the weekend

I have to admit, I hate wasps with more passion than you can possibly imagine, but I do think the queen wasps, with their bright, bright colours are rather beautiful...

Reshape... 2 nests less to worry about. Blimey, aren't they big? Found both in DS' bedroom so I'm sorry. I took no prisoners...

Good to hear I don't need to worry about nests yet, but if it comes to the worse, may I have that reference to fake nests, please? probably I'm more curious than worried that I will need it, but it is always good to know!

We had a situation like Fliight in that it was clear where the nest was as they were all humming around and going in/coming out. We tried a couple of diy treatments, neither of which worked, so just called out a pest person recommended by the council. I think the diy bombs can be a waste of money.

omg - I was just sat on the loo and I heard buzzing. - I looked up (is only a small bathroom with sloping roof and skylight) and there was the most enormous bloody wasp buzzing around

I have seen more this year than usual. I agree with ReshapeWhileDamp that these are most likely to be Queens and with Prinpo that the professionals are best called in.

I was about to say... oh, there are not as many as yesterday!

Well ours was found by the window cleaner who put his ladder next to a bush only to be leaping off a minute later shouting in pain -shall I ask him to pop round to you ?

That's what I was worried about... need to cut the hedge this week and wanted to know if I should be careful around it...

Funny this thread should appear now when I've just logged on after killing yet another wasp (I'm getting a dab hand with the flip-flop method of dispatch).

DS is petrified of them and we seem to be getting 2 a day on average inside the house.

I'm getting wasps in the house, upto now I've killed 9. I cant find where they are coming from. They seem to be sticking to the window area.

The fake wasp nest thing is called a waspinator. We got one, and it was incredible watching the wasps attack it, thinning it was a rival nest. Didn't get rid of them though.

Sit still outside and see if you can see them coming and going - that will tell you where their nest is. It takes a while of just watching, but once you spot it, you will wonder how you didn't see it before. My neighbours always have them in their eaves, and do damn all about it . They have just had their first baby though, so perhaps they will start doing something now.

We uysed to get them in our loft every year and they used to come down a hole next to our light fitting. I think thet chewed through. . The nests were huge; however we've had our loft boarded this year and there are no wasps to be seen.

Keep finding large wasps every few weeks in/around my 3 year old's room (it's always one at a time). Tonight she's woken up screaming with a dopey one sitting on the shoulder of her onesie! Just can't see how they're getting in, or, if they're already living here, where the nest is... Calling council tomorrow!

2 wasps in as many days in our house, never had any appear like this before unless garden door been open while children played out. One in bathroom, one at front room window. Caught in jars. Huge beasts. Glad I read this. Told children they MUST wear their slippers incase a wasp was on the floor & they stood on it. First time they've ever took notice of a slipper wearing request!

Found a queen wasp in my airing cupboard. I am terrified of wasps and now panicking there could be a nest?! Is this possible?

Old thread but still valid - often a Queen will find a place to hibernate, there may be more but she might be alone.

We had a nest a few years ago, above the bedroom window. I put up nets on sticky backed velcro to keep them out as they only stay for one year and then move to another site. A few did find their way in when the nets weren't stuck down but I put them back out. I won't kill them as they are pollinators and we need them.

If she is alive, just put a glass over her, slide a card underneath and pop her outside, she is likely to be sleepy. Try not to disturb her too much and she won't hurt you.

We had an old tree removed after a storm and the wasps had moved to it, I had them sitting on me as I did the gardening if I was too close, so blew on them and they flew off. Maybe they knew they were safe with me.

I had one in my room this afternoon, I'd left the window open so she must have flown in. I'd read this thread the other day or I wouldn't have known she was a queen. Managed to open all the windows and got her to fly away but made it clear to the kids if they see one indoors again they must tell me before it makes itself at home and I have to move out because I'm so scared of the evil little buggers

I still have nets velcro'd to the windows so they don't come in, but also to keep clothes moths out.

Any wasp before the end of April is a queen.
