November Declutter Challenge

Hetyanni · 31/10/2021 08:57

I'm sure there was a thread on this for October but I can't find it now!

I am planning on decluttering 1 item on the 1st November, 2 on the 2nd, 3 on the 3rd and so on for all of November. If I bring anything new into the house, I declutter an extra thing that day so things aren't just being replaced. I am planning on keeping a box in the porch for this purpose so it can be collected together and donated each time there is enough.

Would anyone like to join me?

Meant to add - this means that by the 30th November we will have decluttered 465 items. I have already had a big pre-Christmas clear out so hopefully this will feel like quite a difference!

Me🙋 I may bend the rules a little and "save up" for later days when I have a big declutter. I've been getting rid of quite a lot of stuff anyway. Thoroughly recommend the Preloved to Reloved FB group as well, especially for things a charity shop wouldn't be able to use.

TroysMammy · 31/10/2021 09:06

I'd like to join but in reality I need a skip.

You've got to start somewhere! Could you try to think of this as an easy way in/ a way to reduce the need for a skip?
TroysMammy · 31/10/2021 09:20

@Notthissticky. Some of the stuff I have is unsuitable for charity shops and selling so it unfortunately will end up in landfill. I haven't got the motivation to try and find out of the couple of packs of crepe paper for example could go to something worthwhile.

I'm on holiday from work week beginning 8 November so will hopefully have a blitz.

Great shout on the FB group, thanks!

Currently eyeing up my house considering what item number 1 is going to be tomorrow...

Luckily my DP helps out in a charity shop with his disabled clients so I can give them unwanted items. Unfortunately my DP has taken to buying and bringing stuff home from the same charity shop. Recently a cheese knife set in a wooden box. However I have a much loved glass and beaded cheese board with matching knives which I bought from The Pier many years ago.

Hetyanni · 31/10/2021 14:09

Haha my dh brought a massive telescope home from a charity shop a few months ago. Hasn't been touched. Perhaps that is item number one...

At least it is easy for you to donate. I have a lovely shop just at the end of my road who are happy to take donations.

Oooh , I was looking for this thread today and contemplating starting one so thanks ! I still have so much excess stuff left in our new house I’m trying to declutter as I unpack and organise . I managed to just catch up in time on last months challenge and do the 30 days worth in half the time since I started on it so late . it was a lot in the end but I did it thanks to boxes and boxes of kids old clothes I’m finally able to face looking through .

Item number 1 in the donation box - a toy truck my son hasn't looked at in months.

wish I'd seen this earlier

well today I decided to clear out our 4 kitchen drawers....so satisfying. I was on a mission to get rid of what I don't and won't, ever use

a nutcracker went
the melon baller stayed

cleared out the drawer of crap we all have, and some cupboards which contained, some embarrassing out of date food items... with all 4 drawers, junk off shelving and some other bits it was a bin liner full. a box of recycling as well

put a pine shelving unit on fb marketplace, it went in 2 hours. I let it go for free,I think thats key to a swift removal..

buckeejit · 01/11/2021 19:56

I'm going to try but daily commitment is too much right now as I've a lot going on.

I struggle with the good things that are too good to donate & I should eBay but will just sit for months/years in a bag waiting for me to be arsed to list them.

I will update with things that are making their way out & may have a further cull on toys so I can remove some kallax units from the hall. I don't want the hall to scream IKEA & they've been annoying me for a while!

Nordicmom · 01/11/2021 23:55

Day 1:

  • 1 more plastic strapping little basket from DD old room was found when we unpacked and finally fully emptied of boxes and organised our open plan kitchen dining family room so it’s going like the others I now have nice kubu rattan baskets in many places in our house inc on kids shelves . Feels very odd to be starting with these low numbers again after having to do 59 on the last day ( I did days 29 and 30 then since I was catching up )
Llamasally · 01/11/2021 23:59

I’d like to do this but don’t know what to do with half of it!

Notthissticky · 02/11/2021 00:01

Anyone else going into list overdrive?😂 I got rid of 11 things today but the "toast man" brought a new (to us) coat for baby DS, so -10 on balance. Keeping a list of things to potentially get rid of. Am already on roughly 20. If it's not actually in the bin or out of the house I'm not counting it, as the last charity bag sat in the hallway for months.

Notthissticky · 02/11/2021 00:05

Give away to friends or family Give away on Facebook Donate to charity shop Donate to baby bank Donate to women's refuge Reuse/ repurpose (but do it immediately) Sell on eBay/ FB/ Vinted/ Shpock/ Gumtree Put outside house free to take Car boot sale Recycle Bin/ tip
THATlittleBANGER · 02/11/2021 08:32

Yes me please!

I tried last month but failed!

I have since started selling on vinted which i really recommend! Alot of my items are going through there but i wont count til they actually leave the house!

Day 1) pramsuit (vinted) [plus 3 plastic bibs also vinted]

Nordicmom · 02/11/2021 10:57

Day 2:
-1 wheeled basket that we’ve kept DD large books like encyclopaedias etc . I’m putting them elsewhere in a sideboard now though and there’s no space for it in her room so it’s time for it to go ,we’ve had it for a long time so it’s had a good run with two kids

  • 1 plastic white small IKEA container I used in the pantry ,I have thrown out several already but found one more while unpacking last night . I’m using different ones in the food cupboards now ,the home edit from John Lewis so this can go
TeacupDrama · 02/11/2021 11:37

yesterday old radio aerial for CD/ radio player =1
today 2 old magazines = 2 (3)
I am actually doing a 1000 items in 2021 challenge have done 883 need 117 December will be busy so hopefully doing this in November will help meet and exceed target

Llamasally · 02/11/2021 18:24

Thanks for the help - I started! Took a huge bag to the local baby bank and binned some unidentifiable parts of toys which have been hanging around in corners forever

Notthissticky · 02/11/2021 19:33

Current balance is 20 out and 2 in, so -18. I have got a few purchases arriving in the next few days though, including a farm animals set which will count as several items. I'm keeping a list of all the stuff that can go on my phone and am really enjoying the challenge so far... Just a bit concerned I'll hardly notice the difference at the end of the month😅

I love the idea of 1000 items decluttered in a year! Do you keep track of the things you ditched or just numbers? I reckon that getting rid of all the outgrown baby clothes would get me quite far😱
