Steam cleaner? Might help lift the fatty element of milk.

When one of my DDs helpfully poured their milk on the living room carpet (ffs, the only carpeted room downstairs!) I sprayed it with Method lavender spray stuff, and steam cleaned it. I was a bit paranoid about it smelling, but it never did. I don't know how it would do if it's already started to smell though. I would guess you'd need to kill off the bacteria.

Weak solution of Zoflora sorted this for me (thanks DS for not telling me about the spilt milk!)
